Introduction
For some time, it has been possible to convert vehicles with the Euro 5 standard or the Euro 6 standard to the Euro 3 standard. The conversion represents an option for vehicles that are intended for export to countries in which the statutory requirements correspond to the Euro 3 standard. For markets without binding emissions legislation, it is also possible to convert vehicles to a non-regulated emissions standard. Conversion can only be performed at operations that have write authorization for VeDoc.
Vehicles that can be converted
Conversion is only possible on the following vehicle model series: model 963, 964 with engine 471.9.
Furthermore, the vehicles must be outside the manufacturer's term of warranty. This means:
With model 963: Vehicles older than 36 months or with a service time 450,000 km
With model 964: Vehicles older than 36 months or with a service time 250,000 km
For vehicles that are converted within the manufacturer term of warranty, the conversion renders the warranty claim void.
Scope of conversion when converting from the Euro 5 standard to the Euro 3 standard:
Change of the software release in various control units.
Scope of conversion when converting from the Euro 5 standard to an unregulated emissions standard (countries without any exhaust gas legislation):
Change of the software release in various control units.
Mechanical deactivation of the exhaust gas recirculation system.
Scope of conversion when converting from the Euro 6 standard to the Euro 3 standard:
Change of the software release in various control units.
Replacement of the exhaust gas center section with a modified variant.
Replacement of diesel particulate filters with empty sleeves or conversion of diesel particulate filters.
Scope of conversion when converting from the Euro 6 standard to an unregulated emissions standard (countries without any exhaust gas legislation):
Change of the software release in various control units.
Replacement of the exhaust gas center section with a modified variant.
Replacement of diesel particulate filters with empty sleeves or conversion of diesel particulate filters.
Mechanical deactivation of the exhaust gas recirculation system.
Conversion packages
The vehicle-specific conversion package can be determined using XENTRY parts information. This can be located at the "Engine" tab in design group "99 Retrofit installation".
Reduction in performance
The change in software releases in the various control units and the mechanical modifications performed in some cases result in a reduction in power output for some vehicles. In other words, the power output on vehicles that are converted to the Euro 3 standard remains unchanged. In the case of vehicles that are converted to a non-regulated emissions standard, the power output will be reduced by 20 kW.
An exception here are vehicles with a 375 kW engine - when converting to the Euro 3 standard their power output is reduced to 350 kW, conversion to an unregulated emissions standard to 330 kW.
Deactivation of driving functions
When converting Euro 6 vehicles, the "POWER" drive program is set as standard. On vehicles that met the Euro 5 standard or the EEV standard before the conversion, the previous drive program remains unchanged.
On all vehicle, the SA code "Top Torque" is removed, if available.
Conversion parts kits
The respective conversion parts kit is specified in the respective work instructions for the conversion.
Replacement parts for converted vehicles
If parts that are affected by the conversion need to be replaced on converted vehicles, e.g. if the exhaust aftertreatment unit or the engine have to be replaced, the required parts and major assemblies must first be ordered through the usual channel. The workshop must then decide whether the corresponding conversion parts (e.g. the cap for the exhaust gas recirculation) of the removed major assembly can be reused or whether, in case of doubt, another conversion parts kit as specified in the corresponding work instructions must be ordered and installed.
Certificate and marking
On the engine, depending on the type of conversion, either the previous engine model plate is covered over or individual details on the existing model plate are rendered illegible. At the driver door, either an additional vehicle identification plate is attached or the existing plate is modified. The engine model designation or engine number have not been changed.
A manufacturer certificate is required when converting to the Euro 3 standard. This can be requested from the following address:

Work instructions
The conversion procedure for the respective variant is described in the work instructions specified below.
Transport of vehicle after the conversion
The customer is responsible for transporting the vehicle to and from the location of the service workshop which is to perform the work. Due to the fact that, after the conversion, the vehicle only then fulfills the Euro 3 standard or no longer fulfills a regulated emissions standard, the national regulations must be observed during subsequent transport. Any special approvals from the national authorities or transfer/export identification plates etc. are required if the vehicle is to be transported on "its own axles".
Changes to maintenance
As a result of the conversion, there are changes to the maintenance routine, e.g. due to the absence of the diesel particulate filters. In the onboard computer, the following data must be changed under operating fluids so that the operating fluids correspond to those used or predominantly used:
- Engine oil quality
- Fuel grade
The maintenance system then automatically adapts the service dates.
Restrictions with regard to diagnosis capability
The modifications and the resulting changes to the software release for various control units mean that the subsequent diagnosis capability through XENTRY is no longer fully available.
The restrictions mainly concern the diagnosis of faults that correlate between the engine management (MCM) control unit and exhaust aftertreatment (ACM) control unit.
Procedure for conversion
1 Determination of the respective conversion parts kit via XENTRY parts information.
2 Ordering and delivery.
3 Security code from the information sheet of the conversion parts kit sent via email to the MBox.
An information sheet with a security code is always enclosed with the respective conversion parts kit. This code, together with the vehicle identification number (FIN) must be sent to the following MBox address before conversion:
This is required to ensure that a VeDoc Superuser can then update the code M5J (replacement part conversion variant to Euro III) in the vehicle data card.
Only then is the necessary software update with XENTRY possible. On workdays the code is updated within a maximum of 24 hours.
You will receive an info email when the code has been updated.
4 Installation of the conversion parts kit.
5 Change of the software release in various control units.
6 Request for manufacturer's certificate and change to approval (only when converting to the Euro 3 standard).
7 Initial startup of the vehicle.
