Modification notes
| Removing | ||
Danger! | Risk of explosion caused by fuel igniting, risk of poisoning caused by inhaling and swallowing fuel and risk of injury to eyes and skin caused by contact with fuel | No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear protective clothing when handling fuel.
1 | Switch off ignition | ||
Danger! | Risk of injury caused by body parts being pinched or crushed as cab is tilted | Ensure that no one is within the tilting range of the cab as it is being tilted. Always tilt the cab all the way to the end position and secure with the safety strut.
2.1 | Tilt cab | Model 374, 375, 673, 674, 676, 950, 952, 953, 954, 957, 958, 970, 972, 974, 975, 976
For model 957 open the maintenance flap.
| Notes on tilting the cab | ||
2.2 | Remove service cover | Model 668, 670
3 | Remove soundproofing on frame at the left | Only for model 374, 375, 673, 674, 676, 950, 952, 953, 954, 957, 958, 970, 972, 974, 975, 976.
4 | Remove engine panel | ||
5 | Clean crankcase in the area of the relevant unit pump
6 | Remove injection line (1) for the corresponding unit pump
7 | Mark unit pumps relative to respective cylinder | Only when removing several unit pumps
8 | Detach bracket for manual gearshift system at cylinder head | Only on vehicles with code (GS1) "mechanical" gearshift for removing the unit pump of cylinder 1 (Y6).
9 | Remove hydraulic lines (30) with bracket (32) and clamp (31) on engine and place aside | Only on vehicles with code (GS3) "Hydraulic" gearshift for removal of unit pump for cylinder 1 (Y6).
Do not disconnect hydraulic lines (30).
10 | Remove mounting strip for electrical engine wiring harness (2) with engine start and engine stop buttons at crankcase | Only necessary if on engine 904.9 the unit pump for cylinder 2 (Y7) or unit pump for cylinder 3 (Y8) or on engine 906.9 the unit pump for cylinder 4 (Y9) or the unit pump for cylinder 5 (Y10) must be removed.
11 | Disconnect electrical engine wiring harness (2) on the corresponding unit pump
12 | Loosen bolts (3) on relevant unit pump and unscrew by 4 to 5 mm | The unit pump is under spring force and can suddenly spring out of the crankcase if the bolts (3) are unscrewed completely and get damaged.
13 | Install impact extractor (5) on relevant unit pump
14 | Pull out relevant unit pump using the impact extractor (5) up to the heads of the bolts (3) | A firmly attached unit pump must not be pushed out at solenoid valve and housing flange, otherwise solenoid valve damage could occur.
15 | Remove impact extractor (5)
16 | Unscrew bolts (3) and remove unit pump
| Checking | ||
17 | Check roller tappet (4) at unit pump | Check surface of roller tappet (4). The unit pump can be used again if there are only minimal score marks or scratches on it. If deep scores, scratches or grinding points are present:
Replace relevant unit pump and also check unit pump lobes on the camshaft by visual inspection.
| Install | ||
18 | Carefully remove dirt and paint residues on the crankcase sealing surface | Seal off hole in crankcase.
19 | Replace O-rings on the unit pump | Only when reinstalling used unit pumps.
| |||
Hot bearing grease | |||
20 | Slightly coat unit pump body and the hole in the crankcase with hot bearing grease
21 | Screw both assembly pins into crankcase and install unit pump | Do not damage O-rings at unit pump body. Pay attention to installation location and carefully press in the unit pump manually against the spring force.
If it is not possible to press in unit pump to a sufficient depth, turn engine further by approx. one half revolution (in direction of rotation).
| Assembly pins for installing unit pump | ||
22 | Replace assembly pins with bolts (3) and tighten the unit pump using bolts (3)
23 | Fit mounting strip for electrical engine wiring harness (2) with engine start and engine stop buttons at crankcase | Only necessary if on engine 904.9 the unit pump for cylinder 2 (Y7) or unit pump for cylinder 3 (Y8) or on engine 906.9 the unit pump for cylinder 4 (Y9) or unit pump for cylinder 5 (Y10) have been removed.
24 | Install the electrical engine wiring harness (2) on the corresponding unit pump
25 | Install bracket for manual gearshift system at cylinder head | Only on vehicles with code (GS1) "mechanical" gearshift if the unit pump of cylinder 1 (Y6) has been removed.
26 | Attach hydraulic lines (30) with holder (32) and clamps (31) on engine | Only on vehicles with code (GS3) "hydraulic" gearshift if the unit pump of cylinder 1 (Y6) has been removed.
27 | Install injection line (1) for the corresponding unit pump
Danger! | Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running | Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
28 | Start the engine and bleed the fuel system | The fuel system is bled automatically. Run the engine for approx. 1 minute. If the engine stops or does not start, repeat starting procedure after a break of 2 minutes.
29 | Turn off engine | ||
30 | Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and teach in bar code of unit pump | Only when installing new unit pumps.
31 | Install engine paneling
32 | Install soundproofing on frame at the left | Only for model 374, 375, 673, 674, 676, 950, 952, 953, 954, 957, 958, 970, 972, 974, 975, 976.
Danger! | Risk of injury caused by body parts being pinched or crushed as cab is tilted | Ensure that no one is within the tilting range of the cab as it is being tilted. Always tilt the cab all the way to the end position and secure with the safety strut.
33.1 | Lower cab | Model 374, 375, 673, 674, 676, 950, 952, 953, 954, 957, 958, 970, 972, 974, 975, 976
