Common rail diesel injection system, general points

The common rail diesel injection system operates in an electrical network of sensors and actuators for engine 642.8 to form the engine management system "CR61".

The short designation "CR61" stands for:

CR = Common Rail

61 = CDI 61 as an ongoing generation designation for diesel direct injection technology

The "common rail" is the line shared by all injectors for fuel delivery. The fuel upstream of the injection is stored in this common line.

The entire engine management is located in the CDI control unit. Sensor data are directly read in from the engine management and indirectly via the CAN network and actuate the control actuators as required. The individual functions and systems of the engine management are controlled and coordinated by the CDI control unit.

The following table provides a model and major assembly overview:

Diagnosis

For diagnostic purposes, the fault codes of the engine management system can be read out and deleted using Xentry Diagnostics, and individual diagnostic functions can be specifically actuated.

Transport mode

In transport mode various functions of the engine management are limited. More information is available in the function "Energy management". If the kilometer reading of the vehicle is more than 250 km, the system condition "vehicle transport mode" is automatically deactivated and can also not be reactivated anymore using the diagnostic system.

Variant coding
With variant coding the following vehicle versions and equipment can, for example, be coded using XENTRY Diagnostics:

Vehicle model

National version

Exhaust variant

Transmission version

Flash programming

The engine management in the CDI control unit is flashable, i.e. the entire software of the control unit can be exchanged (replaced) using Xentry Diagnostics. The software required for control unit programming can be found in the diagnostic system.

CAN network

The CDI control unit exchanges data via the attached drivetrain CAN and the engine CAN with the powertrain control unit.

Furthermore the powertrain control unit serves as an interface (Gateway) between the CAN bus systems and the CDI control unit.

Engine 642.8 complies with EU -6 exhaust emissions standard and is characterized by the following components:

V6 crankcase made out of aluminum instead of cast iron

Balance shaft located in the "V" of both cylinder banks, which rotates in the opposite direction to the crankshaft

Valve assembly with roller cam followers

Rapid glowing system with glow output stage

A flow-dynamics optimized forced induction system consisting of a ATL with variable turbine geometry

Exhaust gas recirculation with water-cooled exhaust gas recirculation cooler

Highly efficient ventilation system with centrifugal oil separator

Fuel injectors (Y76) with piezo technology

Intake controlled high-pressure pump with lower operating energy input on average, leading to reduced fuel consumption

Switchable coolant pump

Water-cooled charge air cooler
