Document for model 470, 471 extended and content adapted accordingly. Information on updating map data (Freshmap) updated.

To improve customer satisfaction in combination with the map data and software update for the Garmin® MAP PILOT, we would like to notify you of the following:

System components

The basis is the code EG9 (Garmin MAP PILOT) or code EV5 (Preinstallation for Garmin MAP PILOT).

The map data required for the navigation system and the navigation software are located on the SD card. For navigation, the SD card must always be plugged into the multimedia connection unit (A36) because the data are not transferred to the radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6).

When inserting the SD card into the SD card slot of the multimedia connection unit (A36), the corresponding vehicle operator's manual must be taken into consideration.

When code EG9 (Garmin MAP PILOT) is ordered ex factory, the SD card is included with the vehicle. By opening the SD card packaging, the customer accepts the licensing terms and conditions (see SD card packaging). When code EV5 (Pre-installation for Garmin MAP PILOT) is ordered, this SD card can be procured from MercedesBenz Accessories GmbH. Additional information is available in the ODUS system of MercedesBenz Accessories GmbH.

When retrofitting the SD card care must be taken to ensure that an initial SD card is ordered and not an update SD card. For this retrofit, code EG9 (Garmin MAP PILOT) must still be subsequently added to the vehicle data card in VeDoc.
An initial SD card must always be used in case of initial startup or replacement of radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6). In all other cases, an update SD card can be used.

Initial startup and copy protection

Initial startup is performed automatically by inserting the SD card into the SD card slot and selecting navigation mode in the radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6). Following initial startup, the SD card is authorized for the respective radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6) and can then only be used for this radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6). If an authorized SD card is used in a different radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6), a fault message appears: either "Cards not activated" or "Update of SD card not supported".

If the fault message " Cards not enabled" is confirmed, the navigation application can be operated. However, the map view is deactivated and it is not possible to enter addresses. The following fault code is stored in the radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6):

B15829A

"Anti-theft protection for the map data on the memory card is active. The operating conditions for the component or the system are not satisfied."

If the radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6) has to be replaced, a new initial SD card must additionally be ordered as a remanufactured part and authorized for the new radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6). For this, see the EPC footnote "Please also order memory card for navigation system". The previous SD card has to be returned with the old radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6) as it will undergo reconditioning as a remanufactured part.

Operating instructions

The SD card contains an operator's manual as a PDF file. The PDF file can be called up on a suitable computer. A hard copy version of a Quick Start Manual is also included in the packaging.

Update of map data and navigation software (worldwide) by procuring an update SD card

For all markets in which the Garmin® MAP PILOT is available, a navigation update SD card be procured from MercedesBenz Accessories GmbH. Further information is available in the ODUS system of MercedesBenz Accessories GmbH.

Please note that an update SD card cannot be used to perform an initial startup of the navigation system. Initial startup must be performed using an initial SD card (ex factory) or an initial SD card for a retrofit (from the ODUS system). Only then can an update SD card be used.

Update of map data and navigation software (worldwide) via the Download Manager

The map data and navigation software (worldwide) can be updated by the customer himself or the supporting dealer, and it is available through the MercedesBenz Download Manager free of charge. For an update we recommend the use of the latest version of the Download Manager.

For customers:

The map data and navigation software on the SD card can be updated by the customer online using the MercedesBenz Download Manager on the computer via the MercedesBenz Shop.

https://shop.mercedes-benz.com/dcp/static/garmin

Please observe the instructions for the Download Manager.

For dealers:

Preconditions and time required

The SD card must have been authorized for the radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6) beforehand. Installation of Adobe® Air® on the computer is necessary for the customer to be able to use the MercedesBenz Download Manager. When the MercedesBenz Download Manager is started for the first time, a check is carried out to determine whether Adobe® Air® has been installed on the computer (only for Download Manager version for the customer). Where applicable, the download of Adobe® Air® is automatically offered.

The time required for an update of the navigation software using the MercedesBenz Download Manager may be several hours. This is dependent on the required content and the bandwidth of the Internet connection.

Update of map data (Freshmap)

If the SD card is authorized for the radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6), the non-recurrent free-of-charge map update as of software release E53.0 I 54.12 I 17/29.00 or E73.2 I 40.60 I 17/41.00 can be performed immediately (Freshmap). It is no longer necessary for the vehicle to have a kilometer reading greater than 200 km (124.2 miles). The map update in the Freshmap time period can be carried out via the Download Manager. A map update using the Download Manager is currently not possible after the "Freshmap" period has elapsed. The Freshmap time period still ends 60 days after a total of 200 km (124.2 miles) has been driven.

When handing over a new vehicle, the customer should be notified of this 60day deadline in conjunction with exceeding 200 km (124.2 miles). An extension of this deadline is not possible. If requested by the customer, an update of the map data can be performed by the dealer during this time period. A cost settlement through warranty and goodwill is not possible.

Note:

For SD cards which were initially delivered with a software release before E53.0 I 54.12 I 17/29.00 or E73.2 I 40.60 I 17/41.00, the following applies:

1 Initial commissioning of SD card (SD card must be inserted into multimedia connection unit (A36)).

2 Remove SD card.

3 Update navigation software using the Download Manager.

4 Insert SD card into multimedia connection unit (A36).

5 Select navigation mode in radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6) (start navigation).

6 Remove SD card.

7 Update map data using the Download Manager.

8 Insert SD card into multimedia connection unit (A36).

9 Select navigation mode in radio (Audio/COMAND) (N87/6) (start navigation).

The map data can only be updated if the Download Manager contains map data newer than the data located on the SD card.

Update of navigation software

Update of navigation software can be carried out via the Download Manager at any time. Precondition for this is the availability of new software.

Additional functions of the Download Manager

Backup copy:

A local backup copy of the SD card can be generated and can be restored if necessary under the following menu item:

Settings

Save & Restore

Save on the computer

Please note that sufficient storage space must be available on the local storage medium.

Recovery:

A previous state of the SD card can be restored under the following menu item:

Settings

Save & Restore

Check

Precondition for this is the availability of the "GarminDevice.xml" file in the "Garmin" folder on the SD card or the first-time use of the functional SD card with the Download Manager. This ensures the a state of the SD card is documented by the system.

Please note that restoring the SD card can take several hours.

System check

Xentry Diagnostics is required to check the SD card slot, the line connection and navigation mode. Various tests are available in Xentry Diagnostics.

In contrast to passenger cars, the use of special tools (e.g. a test card) is unnecessary.

The following operation items are available for a map update or software update:

82 9900 Update map data for navigation system

82 9920 Update software for navigation box

The following damage codes are valid for the Garmin® MAP PILOT:
