Conversion solution for the use of substitute fuel for a longer period of service

Vehicles, such as model Arocs 6x6 3346A with Euro 6 Standard OBD Step D, which are intended for relevant missions in which a supply of fuel at the required quality cannot be arranged could previously be operated with the Nato Single Fuel F-63 substitute fuel, albeit for a limited period of use. With its low-quality fuel package, Mercedes-Benz offers a conversion solution that allows for much longer operation with substitute fuel. If necessary, this conversion can be reversed at a later stage.

Vehicles that can be converted

The conversion is currently only possible for the following vehicle model series: model 964 with engine 470.9. These vehicles are equipped with code JMAB (Preparation for low-quality fuel package) on the distribution side. These vehicles additionally receive the code O5M (ET conversion to low-quality fuel) as part of the conversion.

Performing the conversion and backfitting

The conversion (installation of the low-quality fuel package) and, where applicable, backfitting (removal of the low-quality fuel package) can only be performed by certified MB-Truck operations authorized for this process.

Costs of conversion

The costs for the conversion are settled between the respective external organization service and the respective service operation.

Operation items in ASRA

The following operation items are stored in ASRA for the conversion and backfitting:

G 02 7800 Convert vehicle (installation of low-quality fuel package)

G 02 7801 Convert vehicle (removal of low-quality fuel package)

Work instructions

The conversion is described in the work instructions specified below. Work instructions for the backfitting are being created.

Extent of conversion

Change of software release or parameter changes in various control units.

Conversion of exhaust system: For example,  replacement of exhaust gas aftertreatment unit with a muffler (1) without components for exhaust gas aftertreatment.

Conversion of AdBlue®  components: Deactivation of AdBlue®  injection.

Conversion of various engine scopes: Installation of a condensation line between the air intake pipe and exhaust pipe.

Conversion of diesel fuel metering: Deactivation of diesel fuel injection for DPF regeneration.

Parts for the conversion

The parts required for the conversion are listed in the attached work instructions and can be identified and ordered using XENTRY parts information. These can be found under the "Engine" tab in design group "99  Retrofit installation".

Certificate and marking

The former engine type plate and vehicle identification plate are changed for both the conversion and the backfitting. The engine model designation or engine number have not been changed. After conversion, the data card is supplemented by code O5M (ET conversion to low-quality fuel). A manufacturer certificate is required once the conversion has been completed. This must be printed out and enclosed with the vehicle.

If the vehicle is backfitted, meaning that  the low-quality fuel package is removed again, then the additional code is also removed.

Termination of vehicle registration

A defined emissions standard is no longer achieved after conversion. The vehicle registration elapses as a result. The vehicle owner/operator is responsible for vehicle registration once the conversion has been completed successfully.

Transport of vehicle after the conversion

The customer is responsible for transporting the vehicle to and from the location of the service workshop which is to perform the work. As the vehicle no longer fulfills any regulated emissions standard after the conversion, national regulations must be observed during subsequent transportation. Any special approvals from the national authorities or transfer/export identification plates etc. are required if the vehicle is to be transported on "its own axles".

Perceptible accompanying indications of the conversion

Reduced engine output: There may be a reduction in engine output compared to operation with standard diesel.

Reduced engine braking power: The engine braking power may deviate from the standard installation condition.

Conversion of AdBlue®  components: Deactivation of AdBlue®  injection.

Change in external noises: The external noise behavior can change.

Reduction in service life: Where applicable, the service life of the fuel-powered auxiliary heating may be limited.

Changes to maintenance

The conversion results in, on the one hand, general changes to maintenance (e.g.  due to the absence of the diesel particulate filters) and, on the other, changes that are limited to the period of use. Increased maintenance is required during service periods in which the vehicle is refueled with replacement fuel. The engine oil, engine oil filter and fuel filter must be replaced every 200 hours. The service dates are automatically adjusted in the maintenance system by the software change so that they are displayed in the instrument cluster.

The following data must be changed under operating fluids in the on-board computer so that they correspond to those used or predominantly refueled.

Restrictions with regard to diagnosis capability

There may be isolated restrictions in XENTRY's diagnosis capability as a result of the conversion and the associated changes to the software release or parameter changes in various control units. After backfitting or removing the low-quality fuel package, diagnosis capability is available in full once again.

Procedure for conversion

1 Identifying required parts using the parts list attached to the work instructions or using XENTRY parts information.

2 Ordering the parts and ordering the DVD intended for the installation of the low-quality fuel package.

The process for changing the data card is initiated in VeDoc when the DVD is ordered. The data card is changed so that code O5M (ET conversion to low-quality fuel) is entered.

It is only then that the necessary software change using XENTRY is possible. On workdays the code is updated within a maximum of 24 hours.

You will receive an info email when the code has been updated.

3 Installation of conversion parts.

4 Change of the software release in various control units.

5 Printout of manufacturer certificate and change of approval.

6 Initial startup of the vehicle.

Storage of removed parts for subsequent backfitting

So that backfitting is possible at a later stage, appropriate storage of the removed parts must be ensured. All components must be stored safely against damage and soiling in a suitable transportation case. The transportation case should be stored so that it is dry and protected from weather influences and high air humidity in a building. The temperature range should be between 5 °C and 40 °C. Removed components or parts of the low-quality fuel package that have already been used must be checked for damage before storage. Severely soiled parts must be cleaned using suitable measures.

Information on the restart procedure for AdBlue components after backfitting

AdBlue components must be flushed with clear water during installation and removal of the low-quality fuel package. If necessary, the AdBlue components must be put back into operation after backfitting or removal of the low-quality fuel package. Parts can be replaced because individual components may be affected by commonization.
