General
The high-voltage battery can be externally charged using the private (stationary service line) or using a public power grid (charging station).

Selector lever position "P" or "N" engaged
Central locking UNLOCKED
Charging through service line/charging station
The charging process for the high-voltage battery starts by connecting the charging cable connector to the vehicle socket and the private or public power grid.
For vehicles with AC mains outlet (Japan/China) or combo mains outlet (except Japan/China), the charging cable connector is locked via an actuator motor in the vehicle socket. This prevents it from being detached unintentionally.
A charging forecast is displayed in the instrument cluster. The charging forecast is ether the foreseeable charge level at the moment of a configured departure time or the time at which the high-voltage battery will be fully charged.
The driver can select and adjust the following types of charging:
Immediate charge: The charging process for the high-voltage battery is started immediately.
Charging with departure time: The charging process is ended at the departure time.
The departure time setting is relevant, e.g. for use of the pre-entry climate control.
Depending on availability, the high-voltage battery is charged with one of the following current types:
230 V alternating current (with one phase)
400 V three-phase current (with three phases)
Direct current
The entire charging process is monitored. The charger and the energy source (e.g. charging station) communicate over a data line in the charging cable (Control Pilot (CP)). When charging at a mains outlet, the charging current must be limited if necessary to ensure that the local power network is not overloaded. The maximum permissible charging current can therefore be adjusted using the control box on the charging cable or alternatively using the vehicle settings. The last selected value is retained until it is changed again.
The charging time for the high-voltage battery is dependent on:
Residual charge level
Output of charger (equipment specific)
Charge type (230 V alternating current, 400 V three-phase current or direct current)
If necessary, the 12 V on-board electrical system battery is also charged by the transfer of energy from the high-voltage on-board electrical system to the 12 V on-board electrical system.
Charge abort (vehicles with DC mains outlet (Japan/China) or combo mains outlet (except Japan/China))
The charging process must be aborted by pressing the high-voltage charge abort button before the charging cable connector is removed from the vehicle socket. This prevents the high charging currents leading to an arc when unplugging the charging cable connector.
The charging process can also be canceled using the transmitter key depending on the vehicle's manufacturing date. To do so, the button for unlocking must be pressed three times in succession.
Display concept of LEDs at vehicle socket (vehicles with AC mains outlet (Japan/China) or combo mains socket (except Japan/China))
The locked/unlocked LED indicates the current status of the charging cable connector lock.
The charge indicator LED indicates the current status of the charging process.
