| Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts | ||
1 | Switch off ignition | ||
Danger! | Risk of explosion caused by escaping oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of injury caused by caustic burns to eyes, skin and mucous membranes from battery electrolyte (contains diluted sulfuric acid) or metal spatter due to short circuit. Risk of burn injuries caused by short circuit. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing battery electrolyte (contains diluted sulfuric acid) or absorption of lead over the skin or orifices | No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear acid-resistant gloves and clothing and safety glasses with side guards. Do not place any conductive objects on the battery and avoid any short circuit from battery positive to ground. Only fill liquid battery electrolyte (diluted sulfuric acid) into suitable and appropriately marked containers.
2 | Disconnect ground lead from battery
| Notes on battery | ||
Danger! | Risk of injury caused by body parts being pinched or crushed as cab is tilted | Ensure that no one is within the tilting range of the cab as it is being tilted. Always tilt the cab all the way to the end position and secure with the safety strut.
3 | Tilt cab | For model 957 open the maintenance flap.
| Notes on tilting the cab | ||
4 | Remove soundproofing on the right from frame and the lower soundproofing
5 | Remove charge air pipe (11) | Model 673, 674, 676
Model 374, 375, 950, 952, 953, 954, 957, 958, 970, 972, 974, 975, 976
6.1 | Remove intake hose (12) on turbocharger (6) | Model 374, 375, 673, 674, 676, 950, 952, 953, 954, 958, 970, 972, 974, 975, 976
6.2 | Remove air intake pipe | Model series 957
7 | Detach exhaust pipe (1) from engine brake flap fitting (4) | Installation: Clean sealing surfaces. Check clamp (2) for damage; replace if necessary.
8 | Disconnect compressed-air line (17) from engine brake cylinder
9 | Remove heat insulation (13) | Installation: For model 673, 674, 676 install heat insulation (13) together with compressor suction line on crankcase.
10 | Detach oil return hose (15) at oil return line (14) | Catch any escaping engine oil and seal off holes.
11 | Detach oil pressure line (7) at oil filter and turbocharger (6) | Seal the holes.
Installation: Before installation of oil pressure line (7), fill turbocharger bearing housing through oil inlet hole with engine oil. Rotate turbocharger shaft by hand during this step so that bearing points are provided with a film of oil.
| |||
12 | Detach turbocharger (6) together with engine brake flap fitting (4) at exhaust manifold | Seal off holes at turbocharger (6).
Installation: Clean sealing surfaces. Replace nuts (5).
| |||
13 | Detach oil return line (14) at turbocharger (6) | Only when replacing the turbocharger (6).
Installation: Clean sealing surfaces. Replace gasket.
| |||
14 | Remove engine brake flap fittings (4) with bracket (16) from turbocharger (6) | Only when replacing the turbocharger (6).
Installation: Clean sealing surfaces. Replace nut (3).
| |||
15 | Install in the reverse order
16 | Check engine oil level using oil dipstick or on display, correct if necessary | Observe engine oil grade set in maintenance system or Specifications for Operating Fluids.
Danger! | Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running | Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
17 | Start engine and observe oil pressure gauge with the engine idling | Crank engine with the starter for not more than 90 seconds. Repeat starting procedure after a break of approx. 2 minutes at the earliest.
18 | Switch off engine and check for leaks | Visual inspection. |
