Warning | Risk of injury to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolantspray. Risk of poisoning from swallowing coolant. | Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 °C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.
Topical note | Notes on coolant
1 | Switch off ignition | ||
Warning | Risk of injury caused by body parts being pinched or crushed as cab is tilted | Ensure that no one is within the tilting range of the cab as it is being tilted. Always tilt the cab all the way to the end position and secure it with the safety strut.
2 | Tilt cab | ||
Topical note | Notes on tilting the cab
Installation: Do not tilt back the cab until after the engine oil level test.
3 | Disconnect battery ground line
4 | Remove soundproofing on top right of frame
5 | Clamp off coolant line (23) from coolant inlet fitting (9) with the clamping device (22). | Only on vehicles with code MS4 (BlueTec 4) or with code MS5 (BlueTec 5).
Clamp | |||
6 | Clamp off the coolant line (21) on the SCR tank heater solenoid valve (Y107) with the clamping device (22) | Only on vehicles with code MS4 (BlueTec 4) or with code MS5 (BlueTec 5).
Clamp | |||
7 | Drain some of the coolant from the engine and collect it
8 | Remove the coolant line (23) from the coolant inlet fitting (9) | Only on vehicles with code MS4 (BlueTec 4) or with code MS5 (BlueTec 5).
9 | Remove air intake hose (7) | Installation: Check air intake hose (7) for damage; replace if necessary.
Air intake hose clamp on air intake pipe and turbocharger
10 | Remove charge air hose on charge air pipe (20) | Installation: Check charge air hose and clamps for damage; replace if necessary.
Clamp, charge air hose to charge air housing/charge air pipe and charge air cooler
11 | Remove bolt (24) from bracket
12 | Remove charge air pipe (20) on exhaust gas turbocharger | Close off seal holes on exhaust gas turbocharger.
Clamp, charge air pipe to turbocharger
13 | Remove screw plug (16) and drain off remaining coolant at the oil filter housing (1). | Collect coolant in clean vessel.
Screw plugs to oil cooler housing
14 | Release oil filter cover (2) with oil filter element (4). | When being released, engine oil runs from the oil filter housing (1) and oil filter element (4) back into the oil pan.
Oil filter cover to oil filter housing
15 | Detach electrical wiring harness (13) from coolant inlet fitting (9)
16 | Release tension on poly-V-belt (15) of the alternator (G2) and remove from the belt pulley and guide pulley (14)
| |||
Observe poly-V belt (15) routing diagram.
Installation: Check condition of poly-V-belt (15); replace if necessary.
17 | Release screw of the guide pulley (14) from the carrier. | Screw/bolt, guide pulley to carrier
18 | Remove ground line from alternator (G2) | Bolt, ground line to alternator
19 | Remove alternator (G2) at support | Do not remove the alternator (G2), only connect it to the engine.
Bolt connecting alternator to carrier
Bolt/nut connecting alternator to carrier
20 | Remove both coolant hoses (11) from coolant inlet fitting (9) | Collect escaping coolant in a clean vessel. Check coolant hoses (11) for damage; replace if necessary.
21 | Remove coolant inlet fitting (9) from the coolant pump and the engine carrier | Bolt connecting coolant inlet fitting to coolant pump
22 | Remove oil filter cover (2) and oil filter element (4) | Installation: Replace sealing ring (3). Check oil filter element (4) for damage and contamination; replace oil filter element (4) if necessary.
23 | Disconnect electrical engine wiring harness (12) from oil pressure and oil temperature combi-sensor (B110)
24 | Disconnect electrical connector of the hydraulic constant throttle solenoid valve. | Only on vehicles with code (MZ4) turbobrake.
25 | Release electrical wiring harness (17) from the brackets (18, 19) and oil filter housing (1), and place it to one side | Only on vehicles with code MS4 (BlueTec 4) or with code MS5 (BlueTec 5).
26 | Remove bracket (18) from oil filter housing (1) and from bracket (19) | Only on vehicles with code MS4 (BlueTec 4) or with code MS5 (BlueTec 5).
27 | Remove screws from oil filter housing (1)
| |||
First, remove both screws (arrows) and screw in both fabricated assembly pins at their locations. Then, remove remaining screws.
Installation: First screw in all screws up to the ones in whose locations the assembly pins are screwed in. Then remove both fabricated assembly pins and pull out of the oil filter housing (1) with the magnet pin.
Bolt, oil filter/oil-water heat exchanger housing to crankcase
28 | Remove oil filter housing (1) from cylinder crankcase | Remove oil filter housing (1) via the two screwed-in assembly pins. Catch escaping coolant and engine oil.
29 | Remove sealing ring (6) | Installation: Clean sealing surfaces. Install new seal (6) over both of the screwed in assembly pins.
30 | Check oil-water heat exchanger (5) for external damage. | If damage is present:
| |||
