Modification notes
10.3.06 | Self-locking nut of tie rod on inner tie rod | Model 251
17.9.07 | Total toe at vehicle level
Permitted difference between right and left side of vehicle for front axle toe-in. |
| Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts | All models | |
| Measure | ||
1 | Measure vehicle level at the front and rear axle
2 | Carrying initial measurement of wheel alignment
| Checking | ||
3 | Compare specified value of front axle toe with the result of wheel alignment | Toe at vehicle level
Permissible difference in front axle toe between the left and right side of the vehicle
If substantial deviations in the total toe are found, the cause may be one of the following: Too large a difference in vehicle level between the left and right side of the vehicle, Deformation of steering parts or tie rods e.g. through damage due to an accident, Deformation of front axle carrier or of chassis parts, e.g. through damage due to an accident, Deformation of the body, e.g. due to accident damage.
Check for unacceptable deformations on the body, see:
Check accident vehicles and vehicles possibly damaged in an accident.
Adjust toe | |||
4.1 | Deactivate easy entry/exit | Otherwise, move driver seat and steering wheel to a different position, e.g. if the driver door is opened/closed. Damage to the upper frame can occur when the holding device (2) is installed.
Only on vehicles with memory package (driver seat, steering column, mirrors), code 275.
5 | Move steering wheel all the way up and all the way out | so that the retainer (2) can be installed correctly.
The lever for steering wheel adjustment is on the left below the steering wheel, see operating instructions.
6 | Fix the steering wheel in the center position using the retainer (2). | The steering wheel must not be adjusted anymore after installing the retainer (2).
Retainer | |||
7 | Check center position of steering gear and steering wheel
8 | Install wheel spreader (3) | Insert the wheel spreader (3) at the front viewed in the direction of travel on the inside (arrows A) of the front wheels (4)
The elastic bearings of the spring control arms, torque struts and steering linkage produce a correspondingly large toe measurement which decreases to the correct value under driving conditions.
Wheel spreader | |||
9 | Loosen jam nut on both sides of the vehicle, adjust toe by twisting the inner tie rods at the hexagon | Loosen the hose clamp at the outer end of the bellows before twisting the inner tie rod otherwise this can be destroyed.
Use a suitable open end wrench to counterhold the outer tie rod.
Total toe at vehicle level
Permitted difference between right and left side of vehicle for front axle toe-in.
10 | Tighten the jam nut on both sides of the vehicle | Use a suitable open end wrench to counterhold the outer tie rod.
| |||
11 | Remove wheel spreader (3) | Wheel spreader
12 | Remove retainer (2) | Retainer
13 | Move the steering wheel into its original position again
14.1 | Activate easy entry/exit | On vehicles with memory package (driver seat, steering column, mirrors), code 275.
| Measure | ||
15.1 | Carrying final measurement of wheel alignment | Only if the toe was adjusted. |
