Left turn signal indicator lamp and right turn signal indicator lamp

These are activated differently according to function:

With turn signaling either the left turn signal indicator lamp or right turn signal indicator lamp are actuated by the instrument cluster. The signal for actuating the left turn signal indicator lamp or right turn signal indicator lamp is placed on the Controller Area Network bus class B (interior) (CAN-B) by the SAM control unit (N10). If one of the turn signal lamps fails, the left turn signal indicator lamp or right turn signal indicator lamp is actuated at twice the frequency.

When the anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]) flashers are operated (on vehicles with code (551a) Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW])), the left turn signal indicator lamp and right turn signal indicator lamp are always actuated. The actuation signal is placed on CAN-B by the SAM control unit.

With hazard warning flashing the left turn signal indicator lamp and right turn signal indicator lamp are always actuated by the instrument cluster.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

High beam indicator lamp

The signal for actuating the high beam indicator lamp comes from the SAM control unit via CAN-B.

Fuel reserve indicator lamp

The fuel reserve warning lamp is actuated as soon as the reserve range is reached. Its actuation is linked to the fuel level and reserve indicator.

Brake fluid and parking brake warning lamp

The brake fluid and parking brake warning lamp is actuated if the parking brake is not released when driving or if the brake fluid has dropped below its minimum level. In both cases, the signal for actuating the brake fluid and parking brake warning lamp comes from the SAM control unit.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seat belt warning lamp for vehicles up to 30.11.05

The seat belt warning lamp is actuated as follows:

The seat belt warning lamp lights up (flashes), when status "circuit 61 ON" is given, the vehicle speed is > 25 km/h and the driver seat belt buckle and seat belt warning switch (S68/1) is not closed. The seat belt warning lamp goes out as soon as the driver seat belt buckle and seat belt warning switch is closed.

The seat belt warning lamp lights up (flashes), when status "circuit 61 ON" is given, the vehicle speed is > 25 km/h, the front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor (B48) has detected a person or a child seat on the front passenger seat and the front passenger seat belt buckle and seat belt warning switch (S68/2) is not closed. The seat belt warning lamp goes out as soon as the front passenger seat belt buckle and seat belt warning switch is closed

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The signal for activating the seat belt warning lamp comes from the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) via CAN-B.

A warning chime sequence sounds simultaneously when the seat belt warning lamp is actuated.

The warning tone sequence of the seat belt reminder warning is switched off as soon as the driver / front passenger have fastened their seat belts. The maximum actuation time of t = 93 seconds continues running in the background. If a belt is unfastened within this time, the warning chime sequence is output again.

The seat belt reminder warning is issued once for the journey, but can be set active again when:

Vehicle speed < 5 km/h

The driver door is opened and closed again

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seat belt reminder warning for rear bench seat

The restraint systems control unit reads in the following switches for the rear bench seat and makes their states available as signals on CAN-B:

Left rear seat belt buckle switch (S68/11)

Right rear seat belt buckle switch (S68/12)

Center rear seat belt buckle switch (S68/14)

The instrument cluster reads in these signals from CAN-B and, if all 3 switches are not closed,it displays a message in the multifunction display for t = 30 seconds. This message appears for each of the following:

Circuit 15 ON

The left rear seat belt buckle switch, right rear seat belt buckle switch or center rear seat belt buckle switch is opened again during the journey

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sequence for seat belt reminder warning in countries with legally prescribed seat belt reminder warning (extended New-Car-Assessment-Program (NCAP)) for vehicles as of 1.12.05

In countries with a legally prescribed seat belt reminder warning the seat belt warning lamp is always actuated for the first t = 6 s ( 2s). In all those countries with extended NCAP except this warning phase start as of a recognized engine start "circuit 61 ON" and in as of "circuit 15 ON". Here it is irrelevant whether the driver seat belt buckle and seat belt warning switch is closed or open. If the driver seat belt buckle and seat belt warning switch is not closed, a warning tone is also issued for t = 6 s and beyond. This ends immediately however when the driver seat belt buckle and seat belt warning switch has been closed. An evaluation of the front passenger seat belt buckle and seat belt warning switch does not take place during this phase. After this t = 6 s both the driver seat belt buckle and seat belt warning switch, and the front passenger seat belt buckle and seat belt warning switch are evaluated. If the function requirements are complied with, the seat belt warning lamp remains off.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If one of the function requirements is not complied with (e.g. driver seat belt buckle and seat belt warning switch not closed) and the vehicle drives off, then the 1st phase of maximum 3 EURO-NCAP warning phases starts.

Countries without a seat belt reminder warning (EURO-NCAP) prescribed by law

In national versions which are not equipped with a legally prescribed seat belt reminder warning (EURO-NCAP), the seat belt warning lamp is only permanently activated during the indicator lamp test. With "circuit 61 ON" both the driver seat belt buckle and seat belt warning switch, and the front passenger seat belt buckle and seat belt warning switch are evaluated. If the function requirements are complied with, the seat belt warning lamp remains off. If one of the function requirements is not complied with (e.g. driver seat belt buckle and seat belt warning switch not closed) and the vehicle drives off, then the 1st phase of maximum 4 EURO-NCAP warning phases starts.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Airbag indicator and warning lamp

The airbag indicator and warning lamp is actuated when there is a fault in the supplemental restraint system (SRS). The signal for activating the airbag indicator and warning lamp comes from the restraint systems control unit via CAN-B.

Preglow indicator lamp with engine 640.94

The preglow indicator lamp is only fitted to vehicles with engine 640.94. It is actuated with "circuit 15 ON" as long as the preheating time runs. The signal for actuating the preglow indicator lamp comes from the CDI control unit (N3/9) via the Controller Area Network bus class C (engine compartment)
(CAN-C). If there is a fault in the preglow indicator lamp, a fault code is set in the instrument cluster and an appropriate message is sent to the CDI control unit via CAN-C. However no error message appears in the multifunction display.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ABS indicator lamp

The ABS indicator lamp is actuated when there is a fault in the antilock brake system (ABS). The signal for actuating the ABS indicator lamp comes from the ESP and BAS control unit (N47-5) via CAN-C.

ESP warning lamp

The ESP warning lamp is actuated as soon as the system intervenes in the traffic activities. The signal for activating the ESP warning lamp is sent over CAN-C from the ESP and BAS control unit.

Engine diagnosis indicator lamp

The engine diagnosis indicator lamp is actuated if a fault is present in the injection system, ignition system or in the exhaust emission system. The signal for actuating the engine diagnosis indicator lamp is sent from the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) or CDI control unit via CAN-C.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Low beam indicator lamp (for model 245)

The signal for actuating the low beam indicator lamp comes from the SAM control unit via CAN-B.

With some indicator and warning lamps a fault message in the multifunction display ensues at the same time as actuation. Whilst most messages in the multifunction display can be acknowledged, the indicator and warning lamps light up as long as the fault is present. Messages cannot be acknowledged.

All indicator and warning lamps in the instrument cluster are equipped with light emitting diodes (LED).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apart from the actuations described above all the indicator lamps and warning lamp are actuated during the indicator lamp test with the following exceptions:

Left turn signal indicator lamp

Right turn signal indicator lamp

Preglow indicator lamp

High beam headlamp indicator lamp

Seat belt warning lamp
