Shift operation, general

The single-rod gearshift is not screwed-on to the body side, but rather connected by a coupling arm (27) to the manual transmission and flexibly mounted over the body bearing (28) on the body tunnel. Vibration and noise transfer to the shift mechanism and the body tunnel are prevented by means of rubber bushings on the coupling arm (27) and the body bearing (28).

The selector and shift movements from the gearshift lever (29) to the inner shift module (17) are transferred via the maintenance free shift rod (30) (single-rod gearshift).

This method of transmission has the following advantages:

- Precise and smooth shifting

- No transfer of major assembly motion to the gearshift lever (29) and body tunnel

- The body bearing (28) enables operational movement of the transmission in all directions

Function sequence for shift operation

The function sequence is subdivided into the following steps:

Function sequence of gear selection

Function sequence of reverse gear lockout mechanism

Function sequence of ECO start/stop function (with code (B03) ECO start/stop function)

Function sequence of gear selection

The transverse and longitudinal motions of the gearshift lever (29) (selector and shift motions) are transmitted by the shift rod (30) onto the main shifter shaft (16). The inner shifting module (17) transfers the shift operations to the corresponding shift fork (23, 24) or gearshift arm (25, 26).

To engage the reverse gear the gearshift lever (29) must be shifted, when in neutral, to the left beyond the actuation point for the interlock mechanism and then towards "R".

Function sequence of reverse gear lockout mechanism

The transverse movement of the gearshift lever (29) performed by the driver turns the main shifter shaft (16) and selects the shift track.

To engage reverse gear and push the shift finger (37) into the bottom position (shift track "R") in the shift gate (31), the driver must first move the gearshift lever (29) beyond the actuation point of the lockout mechanism.

At the level of the 1st gear detent the shift finger (37) presses on the roller (34) of the lever (32), which is mounted in a sleeve at one end.

The pressure moves the roller (36) along the arc of the lever (32) producing a rotary motion of the lever (39) against the spring force of the coil spring (38).

The curve of the lever (39) simulates the resistance at the gearshift lever for the driver. When this is overcome, the driver can push the gearshift lever (29) forwards towards "R", the main shifter shaft (16) is moved in the axial direction and the shift finger (37) engages in the bottom position in the shift gate (31) (reverse gear).

Function sequence of ECO start/stop function (with code (B03) ECO start/stop function)

The transmission must be in neutral in order to enter the automatic engine stop feature of the ECO start/stop function. The position of the main shifter shaft (16) is detected via the position of the permanent magnet (19) relative to the transmission neutral position sensor. The transmission neutral position sensor transmits the signal over a direct line to the CDI control unit (N3/9) (for diesel engines) or to the ME-SFI control unit (N3/10) (for gasoline engines).

The readiness of the engine start/stop function is displayed to the driver via the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1).
