Location

The LH compressor is located on the left of the cylinder crankcase.

Task

The supercharger compresses the intake air and therefore increases the degree of filling of the cylinder. This increases the engine torque, especially in the lower speed range.

A Intake air

B Charge air

C Recirculated air

The supercharger is a helical compressor, which functions with internal compression according to the principle of positive displacement.

The two counter-rotating rotors have 3 blades (folded by 60°) and are linked by two oil-lubricated gear wheels (parallel drive). A tight gap (approx. 0.2 mm) is achieved to ensure a seal of the two rotors themselves and to the housing (working area).

A Intake air

B Charge air

The drive is performed via a poly-V belt directly by the crankshaft.

The intake air is fed via the axially located opening to the working area of the supercharger. As a result of the rotation and the geometry of the two rotors, the working chamber is sealed off to the environment after the inducted air flows in. The intake air volumes are compressed as a result of the working chamber between housing and the two rotors being reduced. By means of further rotation, the compressed intake air (charge air) is pushed out to the radially located opening. Charge air not required (when the air recirculation flap is open) is passed back to the compressor through the recirculated air opening.

The compressor allows a maximum boost pressure of about 0.5 bar to be generated in the intake manifold.
