1 Turbocharger

Y77/6 Charge pressure positioner

Location

The turbocharger is located on the right on the crankcase below the exhaust manifold.

Task

Pre-compression of the suctioned in air takes place through the turbocharger depending on the operating condition of the engine.

The charging increases the air mass used in the engine and increases the engine output.

Function

The turbocharger mainly consists of the following 3 assemblies:

- exhaust turbine

- compressor

- bearing housing

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The clean air is suctioned in the compressor and is accelerated through rotation of the compressor impeller. In the spirals of the compressor housing the air speed is slowed and the pressure increased. Drive takes place over the supercharger shaft which is firmly mounted on the compressor wheel and turbine wheel.

The turbine wheel is driven by the exhaust gases passed into the turbine housing. The exhaust is decompressed in the process from a high pressure to a low pressure.

The energy used, that is the operating energy input of the turbine and thus the compressor operation and rpm can be regulated by adjusting the adjustable guide vanes. The guide vanes are "closed" to increase the boost pressure, that is the flowed through cross-section is reduced between the guide vanes. This causes the pressure upstream of the turbine wheel to be increased and a larger amount of exhaust energy is used. The guide vanes are "opened" to decrease the boost pressure, that is the flowed through cross-section is increased between the guide vanes. This causes the pressure upstream of the turbine wheel to be reduced and a smaller amount of exhaust energy is used.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Adjustment takes place over the electrically driven charge pressure actuator. The charge pressure actuator is connected via the adjusting rod with the adjusting lever which actuates the guide vanes via the adjusting ring.

If the boost pressure regulator was replaced it is necessary that the teaching in routine for charge pressure actuator calibration is carried out over Star Diagnosis.
