Danger ! | Risk of injury to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolantspray. Risk of poisoning from swallowing coolant. | Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 °C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.
Danger ! | Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. | Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.
| Notes on coolant | ||
Remove grease | |||
1 | Start engine and bring to operating temperature
2 | Switch off engine and allow to cool off for approx. 30 min | This allows oil which is present to settle in the expansion reservoir.
3 | Check whether there is oil is in the expansion reservoir | If there is oil in the expansion reservoir:
| |||
Suction off oil from expansion reservoir.
4 | Drain coolant completely
| Except code KMKL (additional cooler) | ||
| With code KMKL (additional cooler) | ||
5 | Remove expansion reservoir | Only if there is oil in the expansion reservoir.
6 | Flush out expansion reservoir with a 3% cleaning solution made out of a mildly alkaline cleaner and fresh water | Only if there is oil in the expansion reservoir.
Mixing ratio: 30 ml cleaner to 1 l of fresh water. Dispose of cleaning solution in an environmentally acceptable manner.
Cleaner for engine and cooling system for oil drag-in, 10 l
7 | Install expansion reservoir | Only if there was oil found in the expansion reservoir.
8 | Disconnect feed hose and return hose of the heater and flush heater with fresh water | If possible use hot or warm water. Dispose of rinsing water in an environmentally friendly way.
9 | Attach feed hose and return hose of the heater
10 | Disconnect coolant hoses at the interfaces between engine, cooler and retarder
11 | Flush out engine, cooler and retarder with fresh water | If possible use hot or warm water. Dispose of rinsing water in an environmentally friendly way.
12 | Attach coolant hoses at the interfaces between engine, cooler and retarder
13 | Fill engine cooling system with a 3% cleaning solution of a mildly alkaline cleaner and fresh water
Mixing ratio: | |||
Cleaner for engine and cooling system for oil drag-in, 10 l
14 | Set heater to max. heat output
15 | Start the engine and let it run at a medium rotational speed until the coolant temperature reaches approx. 80°C; hold coolant temperature at this level for about 5 minutes | The radiator can be covered over at the front if necessary.
16 | Switch off engine and allow coolant temperature to cool down to approx. 50°C
17 | Drain cleaning solution completely from the engine cooling system | Dispose of cleaning solution in an environmentally acceptable manner.
18 | Flush out heater | Carry out operation steps 8 and 9.
19 | Flush out engine, cooler and retarder | Carry out operation steps 10 and 12.
20 | Flush engine cooling system twice with fresh water; run the engine with each flushing filling for about 5 minutes for this purpose
Drain off flushing water completely after each flushing and dispose of it in an environmentally way.
21 | Check flushing water for fouling | If the flushing water is still fouled with oil after the 2nd flushing process:
| |||
Repeat the degreasing.
22 | Check pH value of flushing water | If no decalciification of the engine cooling system is carried out.
The test strips can be obtained over the GLC.
If the flushing water is not pH neutral after the last flushing process:
| |||
Perform a further flushing process.
Decalcify | |||
23 | Fill engine cooling system with a 10% cleaning solution of water and citric, tartaric or oxalic acid
Before decalcification, always remove grease in the engine cooling system even if there is no visible sign of oil contamination.
24 | Start the engine and let it run at a medium rotational speed until it reaches approx. 80°C; hold it at this temperature for about 10 minutes | The radiator can be covered over at the front if necessary.
25 | Switch off engine and allow to cool down to approx. 50°C
26 | Fully drain off cleaning solution | Dispose of cleaning solution in an environmentally acceptable manner.
27 | Flush engine cooling system at least 3 times with fresh water; run engine with each flushing filling for 5 minutes for this purpose
Drain off flushing water completely after each flushing and dispose of it in an environmentally way.
28 | Check pH value of flushing water | The test strips can be obtained over the GLC.
If the flushing water is not pH neutral after the last flushing process:
| |||
Perform a further flushing process.
29 | Pour in coolant | ||
| Except code KMKL (additional cooler) | ||
| With code KMKL (additional cooler) |
