Procedure For Repair Welding Of Dome Weld Crack
1 | Scope : To provide instruction to repair axle housing having dome weld crack | The below procedure should be followed only, if
| |||
Crack located within the weld metal
The crack is <460 mm | |||
2 | Remove rear axle housing from the vehicle
3 | Clean the axle housing throughly to get rid of the oil
4 | Place the axle housing between two V-Block
5 | Mark A and A' on both the sides of the crack
6 | Mark another extended mark B and B', which has to be 1 inch from the tail ends of the crack A and A' | This mark denotes the maximum limit for the rework procedure
The mark B and B' should be within the limit of 460mm
7 | Grinding is done extensively on the cracked weld between B and B' ensuring the weld crack is fully removed
8 | AWS E7018 / E7016 specification and recommended welding parameters provided by manufacturer is followed for this repair procedure
9 | The electrodes are to be kept dry and preheated | About 300° Celsius per hour or as specified by the manufacturer
10 | Initailly Arc welding root run is done using electrode E7018/2 mm diameter ensuring thorough root fusion
11 | Subsequently additional weld layers are build up (Two or more layers to get uniform profile matching to the old weld run) using 4mm diameter | Remove the slag thoroughly and clean the weld deposit using steel wire brush on grinding before each pass of welding to avoid slag entrapments
12 | Weld deposits to be made level with the adjacent original welding
13 | Grind the surface. Ensure the complete weld is free from defects like blow holes, porosites, cracks etc.
14 | Clean the internal portion of dome weld thoroughly to eliminate the oil presence and grind the internal surface to be fit for welding
15 | Initially arc welding root run is done using electrode E7018 / 2 mm diameter
16 | Subsequently additional weld layers are build up (Two or more layers to get uniform profile matching to the old weld run) using 2.4mm diameter
17 | Grinding is done thoroughly to overcome weld slay / flux
18 | After welding process reinstall rear axle housing to the vehicle
