Function requirements for electric vehicle pre-entry climate control, general
Circuit 15 off
Auxiliary climate control preset
Vehicle connected to charging station
Electric vehicle pre-entry climate control, general
Depending on requirements, the vehicle interior of the parked vehicle can be pre-heated or pre-cooled before starting a journey, as long as the charging cable is plugged in.
The pre-entry climate control is activated/deactivated and the departure time is set via the settings menu in the instrument cluster (A1).
With Mercedes PRO Connect, the pre-entry climate control can be remotely programmed (web-based via a browser and/or an app using a smartphone, tablet or a PC).
If a departure time is set there, it can be deactivated in the settings menu of the instrument cluster.
An activated pre-entry climate control and/or departure time is shown in the multifunction display in the "Charging" menu, in each case, through a symbol in the status area.
The "Charging" menu is only available when a charging cable is connected.
The function description for the pre-entry climate control is structured as follows:
Auxiliary climate control at departure time, function
Function sequence for pre-cooling
Function sequence for pre-warming
Auxiliary climate control at departure time, function
The departure time can be set, selected and activated in a web-based manner via a browser and/or an app, e. g. using a smartphone, tablet or PC or via the settings menu in the instrument cluster.
With web-based programming, the HERMES control unit (N112/9) receives the requests over the communications module/stationary heater antenna (A2/129).
The HERMES control unit sends the received requests to the electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73/8) and to the powertrain control unit (N127). The powertrain control unit then sends the activated departure time to the instrument cluster, which stores it.
The automatic air conditioning control and operating unit (N22/2) now calculates the necessary starting time for the pre-entry climate control and sends this to the powertrain control unit. Once the starting time is reached, the powertrain control unit sends the request for pre-entry climate control to the automatic air conditioning control and operating unit.
In addition, the automatic climate control control and operating unit continuously transmits information on the operating status of the pre-entry climate control to the HERMES control unit.
The information stored there can be retrieved using the smart phone, tablet or PC, for example. The HERMES control unit sends the data over the communications module/stationary heater antenna.
The pre-entry climate control is not started if all driver compartment windows and doors are not closed, the hood is open or the ignition is ON. This is also interrupted if a driver compartment door is opened during an ongoing pre-entry climate control and left open for longer than one minute. The opening of a window during an activated pre-entry climate control immediately ends this.
The HERMES control unit sends the data over the communications module/stationary heater antenna.
If the vehicle is connected to power supply equipment, the charging of the high-voltage batteries to the specified min. state of charge has priority. Auxiliary climate control at departure time is only activated following this.
To operate the pre-entry climate control at the time of departure, the automatic air conditioning control and operating unit assesses the following information:
Interior temperature
Specified temperature at automatic air conditioning control and operating unit
Ambient temperature
Solar radiation
If the interior temperature is above the selected specified temperature, the vehicle is cooled. If the interior temperature is below the selected specified temperature, the vehicle is heated.
The vehicle interior is cooled or heated until the desired temperature in relation to the set departure time has been reached. To do this, the auxiliary climate control is activated max. 50 minutes in advance. If the departure is delayed, the climate control for the vehicle interior is continued for an additional 10 minutes.
To change the desired specified interior temperature, the temperature is set via the controller at the automatic climate control control and operating unit for an activated vehicle and switched on ventilation.
The pre-entry climate control is ended once the vehicle is started or once 10 minutes have passed since the selected departure time.
Function sequence for pre-cooling
If cooling is required, the automatic air conditioning function is started.
The automatic air conditioning control and operating unit actuates the electric refrigerant compressor (A9/6), the fresh air/recirculated air flap actuator motor (M2/5) and the blend air flap actuator motors (M2/6, M2/7).
Detailed information on the individual measures is available in the "Electric vehicle climate control function" description.
Function sequence for pre-warming
If heating is required, the following functions are started:
Heat boosting through high voltage PTC heater control unit
Seat heater
Heat boosting through high voltage PTC heater control unit
The automatic air conditioning control and operating unit actuates the high-voltage PTC heater control unit (N33/16).
The high-voltage PTC heater control unit heats the coolant. The coolant temperature in the heating circuit is recorded by the condenser pressure and temperature sensor (B161/2) and by the condenser temperature sensor (B94/36) and read in by the automatic air conditioning control and operating unit.
When the coolant has reached a temperature of 35 °C, the automatic air conditioning control and operating unit actuates the circulation pump (M13/4), the condensation prevention switchover valve (Y16/9), the fresh air/recirculated air flap actuator motor and the blend air flap actuator motors.
The circulation pump delivers coolant from the high-voltage PTC heater to the heater core and thus enables heating of the vehicle interior.
Seat heater
Vehicles with code H16 (Seat heater for driver)
The automatic air conditioning control and operating unit sends the request to switch on the seat heater to the SAM control unit (N10).
The SAM control unit sends the seat heater request to the driver seat heater control unit (N25/5), which directly actuates the driver's seat heater pad (R13/1, R13/2).
Vehicles with code H15 (Seat heater for front passenger), without code S23 (Two-seater front passenger seat):
The driver seat heater control unit also actuates the front passenger seat heater pads (R13/3, R13/4) directly.
Vehicles with code H15 (Seat heater for front passenger) and with code S23 (Two-seater front passenger seat):
The SAM control unit sends the seat heater request to the front passenger seat heater control unit (N25/4), which directly actuates the following front passenger bench seat heater pads:
Center front passenger bench seat cushion heater pad (R13/5)
Center front passenger bench seat backrest heater pad (R13/6)
Outer front passenger bench seat cushion heater pad (R13/7)
Outer front passenger bench seat backrest heater pad (R13/8)
The seat heating is actuated shortly before the departure time and remains activated after the vehicle has been started.
