Danger | Risk of death when working on component parts and systems with U >= 30 V alternating voltage (AC) or U >= 60 V direct voltage (DC) | Do not touch damaged or defective live component parts and lines or non-insulated electrical connections and lines.
Danger | Risk of explosion/risk of fire caused by highly flammable materials in the vicinity of damaged xenon bulbs. Risk of injury caused by UV light, hot components on xenon headlamps and glass splinters produced by bursting xenon bulbs. Risk of poisoning caused by inhalation of mercury vapors and by swallowing of/skin contact with toxic salts and mercury compounds. | Do not touch parts conducting high voltage. Persons with active electronic implants (e.g. cardiac pacemakers) must never work on xenon headlamps. Switch off the entire lighting system. Wear insulated safety shoes, safety glasses and protective gloves. Remove highly inflammable materials from the danger zone. Ensure sufficient ventilation in the working area.
| Check | ||
1 | Park vehicle on a level surface. | The vehicle must be in ready-to-drive condition (unladen, fuel tank must be full (compensate for missing fuel by means of additional weight), driver's seat loaded with 75 kg) in order to check the headlamp adjustment.
2 | Check and correct tire pressure.
| |||
3 | Open engine hood and position upright. | See owner's manual.
Program | |||
4 | Remove cover (1). | WIS Service Media
5 | Remove cover (2) from connector housing (3).
6 | Expose electrical line of plug socket housing (3) so much so that the ground connection terminal stud circuit 31 (4) can be connected.
7 | Switch on ignition. | ||
8 | Switch on low beams and - within 30 s - connect the contact pin in the plug socket housing (3) to the terminal stud ground connection circuit 31 (4). | After approx.5 s the teach-in process starts and the headlamp range control actuator motor moves to the basic position for an unladen driving condition.
9 | Disconnect plug socket housing (3) from ground connection terminal stud circuit 31 (4). | Do not switch off the ignition and low beams during the teach-in process.
10 | Align headlamp adjuster to vehicle and adjust headlamp adjuster to match specifications on vehicle identification plate.
| 000 588 11 21 00 Adjustment device | ||
Note the operating instructions of the headlamp aimer.
Adjust headlamp adjustment for unladen driving condition
11 | Check headlamp adjustment. | For a correct height adjustment, the light-dark boundary must be congruent with the separation line (7) of the headlamp aimer.
If problems are found, | |||
| |||
correct headlamp adjustment by turning adjustment screws (6.1, 6.2).
| |||
After adjusting the headlamp adjustment, do not yet mount the headlamp range adjustment control unit (A317) and the side covers.
Run teach-in process for headlamp adjustment for loaded driving condition
12 | Place a wooden block (10) in the center under the rear axle headlamp range adjustment ultrasonic sensor (B366). | Use a wooden block (10) exactly 5 cm high and with a length and width of at least 30 cm.
13 | Change setting on headlamp adjuster to match the set value for the basic setting. | Set value on headlamp adjuster for basic setting of bi-xenon headlamps
14 | Connect contact pin in plug socket housing (3) for approx. 1 to 3 s to ground connection terminal stud circuit 31 (4) then disconnect again.
After disconnecting the contact pin the headlamp adjustment automatically gradually approaches the separation line (7).
15 | If the light-dark boundary is congruent with the separation line (7) of the headlamp aimer, connect the contact pin in the plug socket housing (3) with the ground connection terminal stud circuit 31 (4). | Keep the contact until completion of the teach-in process has been signaled with the headlamp range adjustment actuator motor switching on and off once.
If the separation line (7) has been exceeded,
| |||
perform the teach-in process again, starting with operation step 7.
16 | Disconnect plug socket housing (3) from ground connection terminal stud circuit 31 (4).
17 | Remove the wooden block (10) from below the rear axle headlamp range adjustment ultrasonic sensor (B366). | As soon as the wooden block (10) has been removed, the height of the main headlamp changes gradually and automatically.
Check result of teach-in process
18 | Change setting on headlamp adjuster to match specifications on vehicle identification plate.
19 | Once automatic readjustment of the headlamp range control is completed, check the adjustment of the headlamps. | If the height has been adjusted correctly, the separation line (7) of the headlamp aimer will be congruent.
If problems are found, | |||
| |||
perform the teach-in process again, starting with operation step 7.
20 | Install headlamp range adjustment control unit (A317) and side covers. | When the headlamps have been adjusted at the adjustment screws (6.1, 6.2).
21 | Switch off low beams and ignition.
22 | Mount cover (2) onto connector housing (3).
23 | Attach electric line of connector housing (3) to cable ties again.
24 | Install cover (1). | ||
25 | Close hood. |
