Danger ! | Danger of injury to eyes caused by steering oil emerging at high pressure. Danger of poisoning caused by swallowing steering oil | The adjustment screws for the hydraulic steering limiters must be turned in by at least three rotations. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.
Danger ! | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
Danger ! | Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. | Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.
| Check | ||
1 | Move front wheels to straight-ahead position
2 | Raise vehicle at front and position front wheels at center of turntables | The rotation angle scales of the turntables must point outward. Pull out the locking pins at the turntables.
3 | Unscrew screw plug (1) with sealing ring (2) | Collect escaping oil in a suitable container.
4 | Install test connection (5) | The test connection (5) can be ordered using part number A 942 351 00 69.
Test connection to steering gear
5 | Connect pressure gauge (3) to test connection (5) using hose (4) | Hose
Pressure gage | |||
6 | Start engine and allow to run at an engine speed between 1400 and 1500 rpm
7 | Turn steering repeatedly to full left lock and full right lock using normal hand force
Until a steering gear temperature of approx. 50 °C is reached.
8 | Turn steering wheel with normal hand force to left up to mechanical stop and read off pressure at pressure gauge (3) and note down
9 | Turn steering wheel with normal hand force to right up to mechanical stop and read off pressure at pressure gauge (3) and note down
10 | Move front wheels back to straight-ahead position
11 | Turn off engine | ||
12 | Compare noted pressures with specified limiting pressure | Limiting pressure
If the limiting pressure is outside the tolerance:
| |||
Adjust hydraulic steering limiter.
Adjust | |||
13 | Loosen jam nut (8) and screw in adjustment screw (6) for steering angle to left (left-hand drive vehicle) and steering angle to right (right-hand drive vehicle) to end stop | In doing so, the jam nut (8) must make contact with the head of the adjustment screw (6) and with the steering gear.
14 | Unscrew adjustment screw (6) by 5 turns and tighten jam nut (8) slightly
Do not yet tighten the jam nut (8) to the specific torque.
15 | Start engine and allow to run at an engine speed between 1400 and 1500 rpm
16 | Turn steering to left (left-hand drive vehicle) and right (right-hand drive vehicle) up to mechanical stop and read off pressure at pressure gauge (3)
Then release the steering wheel again.
Limiting pressure | |||
If the measured limiting pressure is outside the tolerance.
| |||
Loosen the jam nut (8), unscrew and screw in the adjustment screw (6) by max. turn, tighten the jam nut (8) slightly and repeat the test step.
17 | Turn off engine | ||
18 | Tighten jam nut (8) | Counterhold the adjustment screw (6).

19 | Set steering back to center steering position
20 | Loosen jam nut (8) and screw in adjustment screw (7) for steering angle to right (left-hand drive vehicle) and steering angle to left (right-hand drive vehicle) to end stop | In doing so, the jam nut (8) must make contact with the head of the adjustment screw (7) and with the steering gear.
21 | Unscrew adjustment screw (7) by 5 turns and tighten jam nut (8) slightly
Do not yet tighten the jam nut (8) to the specific torque.
22 | Start engine and allow to run at an engine speed between 1400 and 1500 rpm
23 | Turn steering to right (left-hand drive vehicle) and left (right-hand drive vehicle) up to mechanical stop and read off pressure at pressure gauge (3)
Then release the steering wheel again.
