Danger! | Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running | Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Danger! | Risk of explosion caused by escaping oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of injury caused by caustic burns to eyes, skin and mucous membranes from battery electrolyte (contains diluted sulfuric acid) or metal spatter due to short circuit. Risk of burn injuries caused by short circuit. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing battery electrolyte (contains diluted sulfuric acid) or absorption of lead over the skin or orifices | No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear acid-resistant gloves and clothing and safety glasses with side guards. Do not place any conductive objects on the battery and avoid any short circuit from battery positive to ground. Only fill liquid battery electrolyte (diluted sulfuric acid) into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

Battery capacity 100 Ah
2 | Check that electrical connections for terminal 30 at the fuse box, starter, alternator and battery (G1) are secure and in a proper state
3 | Check that battery ground line (G1) and ground connections between the engine, transmission and body are secure and in a proper state
4 | Check electrical connection for terminal 30 and ground line for additional battery for tight seating and a perfect condition | For vehicles with code (E28) additional 12 V 88 Ah battery
5 | Check condition of poly-V belt
6 | Start engine | ||
7 | Inspect charge indicator in instrument cluster | In case of correct charging voltage, no fault message is shown in the display of the instrument clusters.
8 | Turn off engine | ||
9 | Connect up multimeter (1) according to connection diagram | Digital multimeter gotis://E_15/54_06.0
10 | Start engine | ||
11 | Check charge indicator with engine idling and when engine speed increased (up to 3000 rpm) | In case of correct charging voltage, no fault message is shown in the display of the instrument clusters.
12 | Check regulation voltage using a multimeter (1) | Only apply load to battery (G1) for the vehicle's own consumer (e.g. lighting). If the regulation voltage is below 13.0 V, then all transition resistances must be eliminated at the electrical connections of the charging system. If the regulation voltage is above 14.5 V, or is still below 13.0 V following elimination of all transition resistances, then the alternator must be replaced. Refer to:
