Screw (11) of camshaft sprocket (2) is removed for this purpose.
Screws (12) of camshaft sprocket (2) have already been released for this purpose.
Screw (10) has been slightly tightened by hand.
Camshaft and crankshaft are, in each case, in the basic position.

1 | Mount toothed belt (1) and observe markings (dashes) at toothed belt (1) as well as markings (punch marks) at camshaft sprocket (2), fuel high-pressure pump gearwheel (3) and crankshaft gear (4) (arrows). |
Mount toothed belt (1) starting at crankshaft gear (4), then continue to mount over drive wheel (5) of coolant pump to fuel high-pressure pump gearwheel (3), to camshaft sprocket (2) and on tensioner pulley (6). |
2 | Check position of the toothed belt (1). |
After the correct mounting of the toothed belt (1), the markings (dashes) and markings (punch marks) at camshaft sprocket (2), high-pressure pump gearwheel (3) and crankshaft gear (4) must match as shown (arrows). |
Markings (dashes) serve only as orientation when mounting toothed belt (1) and are no longer relevant for the subsequent check of the timing. |
3 | Tension toothed belt (1) by turning eccentric plate (7) of tensioner pulley (6) counterclockwise. |
Toothed belt (1) is correctly tensioned if drift (8) is, as shown, aligned with lower rib (9) of tensioner pulley (6). |
4 | Tighten screw (10) of tensioner pulley (6) . |
Counterhold eccentric plate (7) for tensioner pulley (6). |
5 | Screw in screw (11) at camshaft sprocket (2) and slightly tighten by hand. |
6 | Tighten screws (11, 12) at camshaft sprocket (2) . |

Description of operation steps 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12
7 | Remove locking drift at camshaft and drift at crankshaft. |
8 | Crank engine at crankshaft in direction of engine rotation by four crankshaft revolutions until just before the BTDC position. |
For this purpose, screw in center bolt of belt pulley. |
Crank engine until bore for locking drift in camshaft sprocket is approximately opposite bore in cylinder head. |

9 | Screw crankshaft drift into crankcase. |
10 | Carefully turn engine until crankshaft is in contact with drift. |
Turn engine carefully and without jerky movements. |
11 | Install retaining lock |
12 | Release screws (11, 12) of camshaft sprocket by one revolution and install locking drift. |
13 | Check position of the crankshaft. |
Correct position of crankshaft can be seen from the fact that the marking (punch mark) at crankshaft gear (4) is pointing vertically downwards and the key at crankshaft is pointing vertically upwards. |
S05.10-4514-07
A | Excessively low toothed belt tension | B | Excessively high toothed belt tension | C | Correct toothed belt tension |
14 | Check position of the drift (8) of the tensioner pulley (6). |
If toothed belt tension is incorrect |
|
Correct toothed belt tension. |
For this purpose, perform operation steps 15 to 17. |

Shown on engine 607 |
15 | Loosen screw/bolt (10s) on tensioner pulley (6) through one revolution. |
In the case of incorrect toothed belt tension. |
16 | Correct toothed belt tension through twisting of the eccentric plate (7) of the tensioner pulley (6). |
In the case of incorrect toothed belt tension. |
Check position of the drift (8) of the tensioner pulley (6). |
17 | Tighten screw (10) of tensioner pulley (6) . |
After setting the toothed belt tension. |
Counterhold eccentric plate (7) for tensioner pulley (6). |
18 | Tighten screws (11, 12) of camshaft sprocket (2) . |
19 | Remove locking drift and drift. |
20 | Remove retaining lock. |
21 | Repeat operation steps 8, 9 and 10 to check the timing. |
After setting the toothed belt tension. |
If timings are incorrect and/or toothed belt tension is incorrect |
|
Repeat respective operation steps for setting the timings and/or toothed belt tension. |
22 | Remove center bolt of belt pulley. |
