Risk of injury caused by touching hot retarder and by scalding from hot retarderoil. Risk of injury to skin or eyes caused by retarder oil escaping under high pressure

Do not carry out any work unless retarder is switched off. Wear suitable protective clothing and safety glasses when working on the hot retarder.

Set engine control/permanent brake operating lever to "0" position and switch-off ignition

Clean area around drain screw (1), screw plug (2) and oil filler screw (3)

Unscrew drain screw (1)

 Drain oil when warm.
Collect oil in a suitable, clean container and allow to drain completely.

Remove screw plug (2) carefully



Check

Screw in adapter (4) with new sealing ring

Connect tire inflator (5) to adapter (4)

Give brief air pulses to the retarder with the tire inflator (5)

 Repeat the process until only an oil mist escapes at the oil drain screw (1).
Measure volume of drained oil and determine quantity.
The oil quantity drained must be 5.4 to 5.6 l.

If the quantity is too low:



Check transmission and retarder for any (external) leakage and check seal between transmission and retarder.

If the quantity is too high:



Check seal between transmission and retarder.

Remove tire inflator (5) and adapter (4)

Unscrew oil filler screw (3)

Screw in drain screw (1)

 Replace seal.

 Retarder oil drain screw to heat exchanger

Screw in screw plug (2)

 Replace seal.

 Screw plug, pump pressure measuring point to retarder housing

Slowly pour in specified quantity

 To bleed the retarder system correctly the oil should be poured in slowly over a period of > 3 minutes.
