The navigation system is activated by pressing the button "NAVI" on the control module. A navigation processor with CD ROM drive for the digital map data is integrated into the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) .

Notes on navi-CD screen:
up to 31.05.01; "Please insert navi CD"
as of 01.06.01; "Please insert navi CD model DX"

Location finding

COMAND continuously calculates the vehicle location with

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the aid of the following procedures:

GPSlocation finding

Basic location finding (dead reckoning)

Map-assisted location finding (map matching)

The navigation processor (A40/n2) calculates the most probable position by continuously comparing the position-finding results returned by these three methods.

Route calculation

The route is calculated by the navigation processor in accordance with the specified destination, or automatically, after a deviation from the suggested route has taken place.

If the vehicle is equipped with dynamic guidance (code 815), the current traffic situation also influences the route calculation (e.g. construction site, traffic jam). The calculated route is stored in the navigation processor.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Route guidance

After the navigation processor has calculated the route, route guidance is started.

Three types of depiction can be selected for graphic route guidance:

Symbolic depiction (guidance symbol)

Map depiction

Combination of map depiction and symbolic depiction

Any of the three methods can be used. Route guidance is also supported by voice output via the vehicle loudspeakers.
