Location
The caliper-shaped fuel tank (filling capacity
about 62 liters) is located in the undercarriage in front of the rear axle.
Design
The fuel tank consists of two-layered, very stiff plastic (HDPE High Density Polyethylene). Due to the "U"-shaped cut-out, the fuel tank is divided into two interconnected chambers.
The fuel tank is aerated/ventilated (for operational venting) through the aeration/vent line, Ausperl tank with safety valve (rollover valve) and the activated charcoal canister.
When refueling, the fuel tank is ventilated through the refueling vent line and the Ausperl tank.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When the fuel tank is full, a non-return throttle valve at the bottom of the fuel filler neck closes off the fuel tank. This ensures that the refueling nozzle shuts off more rapidly and overfilling is largely prevented.
At the top of the Ausperl tank is a safety valve, which closes off the aeration/ventilation system if rollover occurs in order to prevent fuel escaping.
The fuel pump is built into the fuel feed module.
Each fuel tank chamber contains a fuel level indicator for detection of the fuel level.
Emptying
The fuel tank has no drain valves. It is drained using an appropriate extraction system.

Function
A fuel strainer is installed in the fuel feed line at the bottom of the fuel pump (as fuel prefilter).
The fuel pump draws fuel from the bottom of the fuel feed module through the fuel strainer and pumps it through the fuel filter and fuel pressure regulator to the fuel distribution rail (singe-line system). The fuel pressure is limited to about 3.8 bar by the fuel pressure regulator.
The fuel return from the fuel pressure regulator flows back into the fuel feed module.
Part of the fuel feed from the fuel pump is supplied to the LH suction jet pump. The suction jet pump delivers fuel from the LH fuel tank chamber into the RH fuel tank chamber and thus prevents the fuel tank from being emptied on one side only.
There is a check valve at the feed point of the fuel filter which prevents reduction of the fuel pressure when the fuel pump is switched off.
The housing of the fuel delivery module serves as a swirl pot. While cornering when the fuel level is low, the swirl pot prevents the fuel pump from drawing in air.
