Fuel tank

M3/5

Fuel pump with fill level sensor

Location

The fuel tank is located on the left in the underbody between the front and rear axles in the area of the B-pillar.

Task

The fuel tank serves to store the fuel.

Body

The fuel tank is manufactured from 7 layered plastic and has a capacity of about 70 l.

Function

The fuel is held in the fuel tank. The fuel pump the fill level sensor draws the fuel from the fuel feed module through a fuel strainer. The fuel pump with fill level sensor then pumps the suctioned fuel through the fuel filter to the high-pressure pump. The leak fuel of cylinder 1 injector (Y76/18) (engine 642.8) or cylinder 1 injector (Y76/1) (engine 642.9), cylinder 2 injector (Y76/19) (engine 642.8) or cylinder 2 injector (Y76/2) (engine 642.9), cylinder 3 injector (Y76/20) (engine 642.8) or cylinder 3 injector (Y76/3) (engine 642.9), cylinder 4 injector (Y76/21) (engine 642.8) or cylinder 4 injector (Y76/4) (engine 642.9), cylinder 5 injector (Y76/22) (engine 642.8) or cylinder 5 injector (Y76/5) (engine 642.9), cylinder 6 injector (Y76/23) (engine 642.8) or cylinder 6 injector (Y76/6) (engine 642.9), the lubricating fuel of the high-pressure pump and the diverted fuel from the pressure regulating valve (Y74/6) (engine 642.8) or the pressure regulating valve (Y74/1) (engine 642.9) and from the high-pressure pump pass back over the fuel return to the fuel tank. Here, the returned fuel supplies the suction jet pump.

The housing of the fuel feed module serves as a swirl pot. In the case of cornering with a low fuel level in the fuel tank it prevents the fuel pump with fill level sensor sucking in air. There is a fuel strainer attached at the inlet to the fuel pump with fill level sensor.

The signal from the fuel level sensor (M3/5b1) is transmitted to the SAM control unit (N10) which transmits the signal via the interior CAN (CAN B), over the electronic ignition lock control unit (EIS) (N73) and via the engine CAN (CAN C) to the IC (A1).
