N68 Electrical power steering (ES) control unit

Location

The electrical power steering (ES) control unit is attached to the steering gear housing of the rack-and-pinion steering.

Task

The electrical power steering (ES) control unit is responsible for the following:

Reading in of sensors and signals

Evaluation of input factors

Actuation of components

Transmission of requests/information

Reading in of sensors and signals

The input factors are read in via the following connections:

Direct line

Engine compartment CAN (CAN C)

Direct line

The following sensor is read in via a direct line:

- Electrical power steering (ES) torque sensor (A91b1)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Engine compartment CAN

The following signals are read in via the engine compartment CAN:

From ESP and BAS control unit (N47-5):

- Steering assistance torque request

- Wheel speeds

From ME-SFI control unit (N3/10) (with gasoline engine) or from
CDI control unit (N3/9) (with diesel engine):

- Terminal 61

- Engine speed

From power monitoring control unit (N3/27) (with electric drive, model 169.090):

- Status of electric drive

From steering column tube module (N80):

- Steering angle and steering speed, detected by steering angle sensor (N49)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Evaluation of input factors

The input factors which are read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor, the relevant components are then actuated and requests/information are output.

Actuation of components

The following component is actuated via a direct line:

- Electric power steering (ES) actuator motor (A91m1)

Transmission of requests/information

The following requests/information are sent via the engine compartment CAN:

- Request for a warning message on the multifunction display (A1p13) sent to the instrument cluster (A1)

- Steering wheel torque and steering rate of change sent to the ESP and BAS control unit

- Steering assistance status
