Danger! | Risk of injury caused by moving parts that can pinch, crush or, in extreme cases, even sever extremities | No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating range of the mechanism when moving components.
Danger! | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer.
| Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts | All models | |
| Notes on AIRmatic | ||
1 | Raise vehicle with vehicle lift | Raise vehicle far enough until the wheels are clear of the ground.
2 | Empty air spring (3) with STAR DIAGNOSIS diagnosis system
| Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory | ||
3 | Switch off ignition and remove the transmitter key from the EIS [EZS] control unit | On vehicles with Keyless Go, code 889: Press Keyless Go start/stop button repeatedly until ignition is switched off. Remove transmitter key from vehicle and store it in a location beyond its transmission range (at least 2 m).
4 | Raise vehicle with vehicle lift
5 | Unscrew threaded connection for compressed air line of air suspension (5) from the air spring (3) | Seal opening at the threaded connection for compressed air line of air suspension (5) and at the air spring (3).
Socket | |||
6 | Carefully pull the air spring (3) downwards at its top plastic frame (arrows B), until the air spring (3) detaches from the retaining clip (1) | Do not twist air spring (3) otherwise it will be damaged
The retaining clip (1) must be replaced during installation as it is destroyed during removal.
7 | Carefully push the air spring (3) together upwards (arrow C), in the process press the air spring centering (4) from below out of the lower transverse control arm (6) | Do not twist air spring (3) otherwise it will be damaged
8 | Remove air spring (3) downwards at an angle (arrow D)
| Checking | ||
9 | Check air spring (3) and cover (2) for damage | Replace if necessary.
If necessary remove the remains of the retaining clip (1) from the upper bore of the air spring (3).
| Install | ||
| If the air spring (3) is not installed and filled in accordance with the regulations, it can be pre-damaged and fail later on | ||
10 | Mount cover (2) on the air spring (3) | The fixing journals (7) must engage in the holes (arrows E) of the air spring (3). The curvature (arrow F) of the cover (2) must be positioned above threaded connection of the compressed air line of the air suspension (5).
11 | Install new retaining clip (1) on the body | Remove the remains of the old retaining clip (1) from the body
12 | Insert air spring (3) | Do not twist air spring (3) otherwise it will be damaged
The air spring (3) must latch in the retaining clip (1) and be positioned with the lug (arrow A) of the air spring centering (4) correctly in the lower transverse control arm (6).
13 | Screw threaded connection for compressed air line of air suspension (5) onto the air spring (3)
Socket | |||
14 | Lower vehicle with lifting platform | Only lower vehicle far enough that the wheels are still easily accessible.
15 | Start engine and run | Before starting ensure that the transmission is in the park position
Use exhaust extraction!
16 | Fill the air spring (3) using the STAR DIAGNOSIS diagnosis system | Ensure leaktightness of air suspension system.
17 | Switch off engine and lower vehicle using the lifting platform |
