Danger

Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform.

Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

Warning

Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running.

Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

AS00.00-Z-0005-01A

Check

1

Warm up engine to normal operating temperature and switch it off.

Only check cylinder leakage when the engine is at normal operating temperature.

2

Remove maintenance flap.

Warning

Risk of injury to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolantspray. Risk of poisoning from swallowing coolant.

Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 °C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.
Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.

AS20.00-Z-0001-01A

3

Turn cap on cooling system expansion reservoir counterclockwise by half a revolution, relieve overpressure, then unscrew cap.

4

Remove spark plugs.

AR15.12-P-1010SR

5

Unscrew filler neck cap (6).

6

Screw adapter (3) into spark plug bore of cylinder to be checked.

Adapter

8

Lift vehicle with lifting platform.

9

Unscrew screws (8) and remove cover (7).

10

Turn engine in direction of engine rotation at the center bolt (2) of the crankshaft belt pulley (1) and use top dead center locator (4) to set piston on cylinder to be checked to top dead center.

Turn engine until the ball in the inspection glass on the top dead center locator (4) falls suddenly.

11

Lower vehicle with vehicle lift.

12

Apply parking brake.

13.1

Engage gear.

Engine 281 in model 453 with transmission 700.12

13.2

Bring transmission into park position.

Engine 281 in model 453 with transmission 700.41

14

Disconnect top dead center locator (4) from adapter (3).

15

Connect compressed-air hose to pressure loss tester (5).

Use a calibrated pressure loss tester (5).

Pressure loss tester

*450589172100

16

Connect pressure loss tester (5) to adapter (3).

17

Apply compressed air to the cylinder to be checked and read off pressure loss at pressure loss tester (5).

If increased pressure loss is detected:

Determine cause.

18

Put transmission into neutral position.

19

Release parking brake.

20

Check other cylinders in the same way.

If required.

21

Disconnect pressure loss tester (5) from adapter (3).

22

Remove adapter (3) from the spark plug bore of the most recently checked cylinder.

23

Lift vehicle with lifting platform.

24

Install cover (7) with screws (8).

25

Lower vehicle with vehicle lift.

26

Install filler neck cap (6).

27

Install spark plugs.
