Danger! | Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns from working on the vehicle as it is being started or when the engine is running | Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself.
1 | Warm up engine to operating temperature of approximately 80°C
2 | Detach right rear wheel
3 | Remove expansion clips (2) and remove cover (1)
4 | Lower vehicle with vehicle lift
5 | Remove maintenance flap
Danger! | Risk of injury to skin and eyes caused by scalding from contact with hot coolant spray. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing coolant. | Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90°C. Open cap slowly and release the overpressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.
6 | Turn cooling system cap on radiator counterclockwise through half a revolution, release overpressure, then unscrew cap on cooling system expansion reservoir
7 | Remove glow plugs | ||
8 | Unscrew oil filler neck cap (7)
| Check | ||
9 | Screw adapter (5) into glow plug hole on cylinder 1 and connect up TDC detection device(6)
| |||
10 | Turn engine in direction of engine rotation at center bolt (4) of crankshaft belt pulley (3) and set piston on cylinder 1 with the aid of the top dead center locator (6) to ignition TDC | Turn engine until the ball in the inspection glass (arrow) on the top dead center locator (6) suddenly falls.
| |||
11 | Install retaining lock for engine
| |||
12 | Disconnect TDC detection device (6) from adapter (5)
| |||
13 | Connect compressed air hose (9) to pressure loss tester (8)
14 | Connect pressure loss tester (8) for adapter (5) | Calibrate pressure loss tester (8). Observe operating instructions for the pressure loss tester (8).
| |||
| |||
15 | Pressurize cylinder 1 with compressed air and read off the pressure loss on pressure loss tester (8) | If there is increased pressure loss determine the cause.
Cylinder leakage: permissible loss total indication
| |||
16 | Remove retaining lock for engine | Only tighten bolt on alternator clamp after a pressure loss test on all cylinders.
| |||
| |||
17 | Check other cylinders in the same way
18 | Install in the reverse order |
