Remove

1

Remove crown gear with differential.

Remove drive flange on rear axle.

Remove temperature sensor (12).

Drive drive pinion (9) downwards out of axle drive housing (10) using a copper-faced hammer, when doing so counterhold or catch drive pinion (9).

Remove tapered roller bearing (2) from axle drive housing (10).

Remove compression sleeve (5.1) from drive pinion (9).

Version (A)

Remove shim (4) and spacer sleeve (5) from drive pinion (9).

Version (B)

Remove bearing outer races (3, 7) from axle drive housing (10).

 Use a suitable drift. Do not damage seat of bearing outer races (3, 7) in axle drive housing (10).

Remove shim (6) from axle drive housing (10).

Only for version (B).

Remove tapered roller bearing (8) from drive pinion (9).

Install

Check seat of bearing outer races (3, 7) in axle drive housing (10) for damage.

 If necessary, install new axle drive housing (10).

Heat up inner race of tapered roller bearing (8) to approx. 80 °C and attach tapered roller bearing (8) on drive pinion (9) up to contact surface.


Always use the new version (B) drive pinion (9) bearing repair kit.
Otherwise the drive pinion (9) may not be adjusted and, consequently, the entire axle drive may be destroyed.

 If necessary, drive in inner race of tapered roller bearing (8) using a suitable drift.

Determine shim (6) for drive pinion (9).

Heat up axle drive housing (10) in the area of the bearing outer race (7) to approx. 80 °C.

Insert determined shim (6) into axle drive housing (10) and install bearing outer race (7) in axle drive housing (10) up to contact surface.

 If necessary, drive in bearing outer race (7) using a suitable drift.

Heat up axle drive housing (10) in area of bearing outer race (3) up to approx. 80 °C and install bearing outer race (3) in axle drive housing (10) up to contact surface.

 If necessary, drive in bearing outer race (3) using a suitable drift.

Determine shim (4) for drive pinion end play (9).
