The front axle differential distributes the torque from the automatic transmission to the drive wheels of front axle. At the same time, the front axle differential is necessary to compensate for rpm differences, e.g. between the inner wheel and the outer wheel when cornering.
When driving straight ahead, the differential cage is driven via the drive pinion and crown gear. The differential cage carries the center bolt with the differential pinions mounted on it.
The differential side gears are located inside the differential cage. The differential side gears are interference fit with the front axle shafts. Between the differential side gears, the differential pinions are pivoted on the center bolt. The center bolt forms the connection between the differential housing and the differential pinions.
The differential cage is mounted in the front-axle housing with angular contact bearings in an X arrangement.
In the differential pinions for heavy-duty operations, a differential spider with four differential pinions is installed between the differential side gears instead of the center bolt.
The front axle transmission is designed as a single-speed differential with fuel-efficient technology (fuel economy). The housing of the front axle differential is bolted to the oil pan via a carrier (1). The drive pinion (6) is at an angle of 83°☐ to the crown gear (3) so as to compensate for the angled path of the propeller shaft to the front axle differential. The ring gear (3) is attached on the engine side and bolted to the differential cage of the differential (4). This location of components of the front axle transmission causes the change in direction of rotation, which occurs due to the single-speed output in the transfer case, to reverse again.
