Problems and complaints regarding vehicles for short-distance transport
On vehicles that are mainly used for short-distance transport (e.g. for transporting fuel oil, container transporters, construction vehicles), the necessary operating conditions (such as speed, exhaust temperatures etc.) which are required for automatic regeneration are often not achieved. Instead, regeneration takes place constantly, but it is never completed. Since this has negative effects on the exhaust system and the fuel consumption, it must be prevented.
Notes on incomplete regeneration
Incomplete regeneration can be identified by the following points:
The customer complains:
The green DPF lamp on the instrument cluster display lights up longer than 3 hours often while driving.
The fault message "exhaust aftertreatment faulty" is displayed.
The following fault codes are stored in the exhaust aftertreatment control unit (ACM):
B30C1F "Component 'diesel particulate filter DPF' is clogged or blocked."
B30C14 "The signal of component 'B37 (exhaust pressure sensor upstream of diesel oxidation catalytic converter)' is implausible."
190E0A "The signal of component 'B37 (exhaust pressure sensor upstream of diesel oxidation catalytic converter)' is implausible."
1A0E0A "The signal of component 'B38 (exhaust pressure sensor downstream of diesel particulate filter)' is implausible."
1A0E02 "The signal of component 'B38 (exhaust pressure sensor downstream of diesel particulate filter)' is implausible."
870E00 "Zone 5 of the diesel particulate filter has been reached."
Malfunctions occur, such as:
The onboard computer of the vehicle makes a direct switch to regeneration status zone 5 without going through zones 2 to 4, because of which manual regeneration could only be carried out by a workshop.
Solutions and remedies
Regeneration block while driving
Switching on the regeneration block prevents the engine from starting regeneration on its own.
- Vehicles up to production period 10/2015 have a switch in the instrument panel for this.
- Vehicles as of production period 11/2015 do not have a switch for this any more, with the exception of vehicles used for transporting dangerous goods or for performing public administration duties. Regeneration is carried out using the menu "Settings" in the instrument cluster.
Please note the following if regeneration block is switched on: manual regeneration must be carried out at standstill without any delay as soon as the yellow notification "Diesel particulate filter fill level increased" or "Diesel particulate filter full" is shown on the display. The specifications in the operator's manual must be observed.
Optimized control unit software specially for vehicles used for short-distance transport as of XENTRY DVD 05/2016
The new software for the exhaust aftertreatment control unit (ACM) has been optimized with regard to some problems; for example, the fault detection threshold for certain relevant fault codes has thus been increased. In addition, it provides various preventive possibilities.
For detailed notes see SI14.40W0033A Software update for exhaust aftertreatment control unit (ACM) with optimization for vehicles used for short-distance transport.
Setting a speed-dependent regeneration block
The new software provides the possibility of setting a speed threshold via XENTRY. Below the speed that has been set, the vehicle does not initiate a regeneration on its own any more. Using XENTRY, the relevant value is set in the exhaust aftertreatment control unit (ACM) under Adaptations Speed threshold.
Setting preventive regeneration
By making an appropriate setting in the exhaust aftertreatment control unit (ACM), the customer can be allowed to choose when regeneration should take place without display of a prompt being necessary in advance. The advantage here is that a regenerated exhaust aftertreatment system is always available to the customer. This setting may only be carried out in cases where it is justified and after close consultation with the responsible MPC. Using XENTRY, the value is set to "0" in the exhaust aftertreatment control unit (ACM) under Adaptations Parameterization Minimum zone of DPF for performing manual regeneration. The value "2" is preset as standard here.
