Danger! | Risk of injury caused by touching hot retarder and by scalding from hot retarder oil. Risk of injury to skin or eyes caused by retarder oil escaping under high pressure | Do not carry out any work unless retarder is switched off. Wear suitable protective clothing and safety glasses when working on the hot retarder. | |
1 | Drain oil from retarder and determine oil quantity | ||
| Retarder - checking, correcting oil level | ||
2 | Remove retarder | ||
3 | Place retarder and handle on a clean working surface | Secure the retarder if necessary to prevent it from falling down. | |
4 | Detach cable fasteners | Installation: Install new cable ties. | |
5 | Disconnect electrical connecting line (64) from retarder proportioning valve (Y44) | Installation: Check plug on retarder proportioning valve as well as mating plug for damage and wear. | |
6 | Detach retarder proportioning valve (Y44) and remove bracket (59) | Installation: Install new O-rings (58). | |

7 | Remove damping plate (57) | Installation: Check damping plate for cracks and replace if necessary. In the case of painted damping plates, cracking or flaking of the paint coat does not impair function. Replace O-rings (56). | |

8 | Remove profile ventilation (8) | ||
9 | Remove circlip (19) | Installation: Check circlip and replace if necessary. The bulged side of the locking ring must face the silencer. | |
10 | Remove silencer (20) | Installation: Clean the muffler with pure benzine and blow out with compressed air. | |
11 | Detach Voith retarder connector (X97) from bracket (6) | Installation: Check Voith retarder connector for damage and wear. | |
12 | Remove coolant temperature sensor pin from the Voith retarder connector (X97) | | |
13 | Unscrew coolant temperature sensor (B65) | | |
14 | Remove oil temperature sensor pin from the Voith retarder connector (X97) | | |
15 | Unscrew oil temperature sensor (B66) | ||
16 | Remove heat exchanger (52) | Installation: Replace O-rings (40, 41, 42). | |

17 | Detach bracket (6) | | |

18 | Detach upper oil reservoir cover (29) | Installation: Replace seal (34). | |
Tighten upper oil reservoir cover (29) | |||

19 | Detach lower oil reservoir cover (45) | Installation: Replace O-rings (43) and gasket (44). Grease O-rings (43) with Vaseline | |
Tighten lower oil reservoir cover (45) as per the specification. | |||

20 | Detach oil reservoir (37) | Installation: Insert new O-rings (21, 22) in the grooves and grease lightly. | |
Mount the oil reservoir (37) on the retarder housing (16) and screw on new bolts (15, 17) lightly by hand. It must still be possible to move the oil reservoir (37) so that the heat exchanger (52) can be mounted afterwards. | |||

21 | Remove exhaust valve (23) and O-ring (24) from the retarder housing (16) | Installation: Check exhaust valve (23) for ease of movement and ensure that it is not tilted. Replace O-ring (24) and observe installation position of exhaust valve (23). | |
