 Danger !

Risk of injury caused by touching hot retarder and by scalding from hot retarderoil. Risk of injury to skin or eyes caused by retarder oil escaping under high pressure

Do not carry out any work unless retarder is switched off. Wear suitable protective clothing and safety glasses when working on the hot retarder.

Set engine control/permanent brake operating lever to "0" position and switch-off ignition

Remove step plate

On semitrailer/tractor combinations except model 375.4, 944

Clean area around central oil drain screw (1) and oil filler screw (6 or 8)

Unscrew oil filler screw (6 or 8)

 Perform oil level check with vehicle sitting on level ground.
Depending on accessibility or on vehicles with solid body, oil can be filled via the bore in the oil filler screw (6 or 8).

Undo central oil drain screw (1) and drain oil into a clean vessel

 Drain oil when hot (hotter than 60 °C).
Measure volume of drained oil and determine quantity.
If oil is missing, the retarder should be checked for signs of a leakage. If the quantity is excessive, the transmission should be checked for signs of a leakage.

Remove O-rings (2 and 3) and sealing ring (4) of central oil drain screw (1) and replace

 Apply Vaseline to new O-rings.

Screw in central oil drain screw (1) and tighten

 Inspect central oil drain screw, replace if necessary.

Slowly pour in specified quantity

 To bleed the retarder system correctly the oil should be poured in over a period in excess of 3 minutes.
If access is difficult or on vehicles with fixed body, fill oil using a hand pump via the oil filler screw (8).


Screw in oil filler screw (6) and tighten

 Replace sealing ring (5).
