Notes on installing propeller shaft

Remove

1

Switch on ignition.

 Hood and doors must be closed.

Release parking brake.

3.1

Shift automatic transmission to "Permanent N" using selector lever.

Model 447 with engine 654.9

 The display of the instrument cluster shows the message:
"Permanent N activated, risk of rolling".

Shift automatic transmission to "N" using selector lever.

Switch off ignition.

 Do not remove the transmitter key.
The transmitter key must remain inserted during the entire repair, otherwise the vehicle will switch to the park position.

Disconnect ground line from battery.

Remove the catalytic converter.

Remove engine crossmember at rear.

Remove screw/bolts (1).


Make sure that the propeller shaft (2) is moved in an almost straight position at all times. An articulation angle of 15° must not be exceeded.
Otherwise, damage will occur and the propeller shaft (2) will have to be replaced.

Make marking (arrow A) on the propeller shaft (2) level with the missing toothing of the propeller shaft (2).

If there is no marking (arrow A).

Remove propeller shaft (2) from front axle differential (4).


The fork of the  pull-off device (8) must be correctly seated in the groove of the propeller shaft (2).
Otherwise, the propeller shaft (2) may be damaged.

Remove propeller shaft (2).

Remove circlip (3).



Check

Check propeller shaft (2) for wear and damage.

In the event of a problem,



replace propeller shaft (2).

Check propeller shaft intermediate bearing for correct position relative to propeller shaft (2).

 The propeller shaft intermediate bearing must be seated at an angle of 90° relative to the propeller shaft.

In the event of a problem,



replace propeller shaft (2).

Check sealing bellows (5) on propeller shaft (2) for damage.

If the propeller shaft (2) is reused.

In the event of a problem,



replace sealing bellows (5).



Clean

Clean contact areas on propeller shaft (2), transfer case journal (7) and front axle differential journal.


All contact areas must be free of dirt.
This prevents any settling or centering errors with the propeller shaft (2).

Grease contact areas on propeller shaft (2), transfer case journal (7) and front axle differential journal.

Install

Replace centrifugal separator (6).

If the propeller shaft (2) is reused.

Install new retaining ring (3).

Position propeller shaft (2) on transfer case journal (7).


Make sure that the propeller shaft (2) is moved in an almost straight position at all times. An articulation angle of 15° must not be exceeded.
Otherwise, damage will occur and the propeller shaft (2) will have to be replaced.

 Observe marking (arrow A). Check correct seating of block toothing (arrow B) on the transfer case journal (7) relative to missing toothing on propeller shaft (2).

Slide propeller shaft (2) over transfer case journal (7) as far as possible.

 Slide propeller shaft (2) at least 40 mm further than its actual installation position.
This enables the ball hub of the propeller shaft (2) to be put onto the front axle transmission journal.

Mount propeller shaft (2) onto front axle differential (4).


Position fork of  pull-off device (8) correctly in groove of propeller shaft (2), and hold straight and do not tilt when pounding in propeller shaft (2).
Otherwise, the propeller shaft (2) may be damaged.

 To do so, position propeller shaft (2) on front axle differential journal of front axle differential (4). Then, pound in propeller shaft (2) uniformly and carefully via handle of  pull-off device (8). The retaining ring (3) must engage correctly at this stage and the centrifugal separator (6) must not be pushed or damaged.

Note installation position of propeller shaft intermediate bearing on propeller shaft (2). The propeller shaft intermediate bearing must not be placed under stress when tightening the screws (1).
Otherwise, the propeller shaft intermediate bearing or the propeller shaft (2) may be damaged.
