1 Mount joint flange on the drive pinion.
The groove in the drive pinion and the groove in the joint flange must be in alignment.
2 Position new collar nut.
3 Attach retainer wrench (01) to joint flange.
Illustration shows rear axle 741.408
4 Tighten collar nut to 100 Nm.
5 Detach retainer wrench (01) from joint flange.
6 Check bearing play at joint flange using dial indicator.
If the bearing is not free of play, the tightening torque can be increased in steps of 10 Nm to a maximum of 130 Nm. If the bearing is not yet free from play at 130 Nm, the interior compression ring must be replaced. This requires total disassembly of the gear set.

7 Identify the position of the drive pinion to one edge of the twelve-point nut using a pin or marking tool.
8 Turn twelve-point nut further by 30° (one point).

9 Determine friction torque (total friction moment) at drive pinion using torque meter (02).
In order to avoid incorrect measurement, crank the joint flange at least 30 times before the measurement using a cordless screwdriver. The determined friction torque must be 0.1 to 0.2 Nm higher than the value noted previously. If the value is below or above this, the inner compression ring must be replaced. This requires total disassembly of the gear set.
A cordless screwdriver can be used for the measurement.
