Warning | Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. | Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.
Warning | Risk of injury from being trapped in the swivel range of steered axles | Ensure that no persons or objects are in the swivel range of all steered axles when turning the steering wheel. Do not stand in the swivel range of the additional steering axle when the engine is running.
Checking play in steering
1 | Start engine, move front wheels to straight-ahead position and switch off engine.
2 | Check steering play (a) at steering wheel. | Turn steering wheel alternately to left and right until front wheels move.
Permissible play at steering wheel in center position
If permissible steering play (a) on steering wheel is too large:
| |||
Check steering gear and steering linkage for impermissible play.
As a separate repair order
Check steering linkage
3 | Check boots (6) of tie rods (1) and drag links (2) of all steered axles. | Check the boots (6) carefully over the entire circumference and in the folds resulting from the installation position for damage.
If boots (6) are leaky or damaged:
| |||
Replace corresponding ball joint, complete tie rod (1) or drag link (2).
As a separate repair order
4 | Determine actual front-axle load. | In the following check of the ball joints, the actual front-axle load must not be 4.5 t (example: loading crane behind cab).
If the actual front-axle load is 4.5 t:
| |||
Lift vehicle at front axle until there is a maximum axle load of 4 to 5 t.
Example: Front-axle load 7 t, then lift front axle with jack by approx. 2.5 t.
Test balance | |||
5 | Check ball joints of tie rods (1) and drag links (2) of all steered axles for play individually. | Hold each ball joint with the thumb and index finger while alternately moving the steering wheel to the left and right.
Permissible axial play of ball joints
If perceptible play is present in the ball joints:
| |||
Replace corresponding ball joints, complete tie rod (1) or drag link (2).
As a separate repair order
6 | Check tie rods (1), drag links (2), steering arms (4), steering knuckle arms (5), pitman arm (3) and steering idler arms (7) of all steered axles for damage and prescribed fastening. | If damage or defects are present:
| |||
Rectify damage or defects.
