75 Fuel tank
Location
The fuel tank is located on the left on the underfloor between the B-pillar and rear axle.
Design
The fuel tank is manufactured from sheet steel and has a capacity of about 70 l.
A number of baffle plates prevent fuel noises.
Function
The fuel flows from the fuel pump with fuel level sensor (M3/6) (for model 639 (M3/3)) over a fuel line to the fuel filter with fuel pressure regulator. Excess fuel flows from the fuel pressure regulator back into the fuel feed module.
A suction jet pump is integrated below to ensure that the fuel feed module is adequately provided with fuel. This is supplied from the return line with fuel.
The filtered fuel (with controlled fuel pressure) is passed on from the fuel pressure regulator via a fuel line to the engine (single line system). The housing of the fuel delivery module serves as a swirl pot. In the case of cornering with a low fuel level in the fuel tank it prevents the fuel pump with fuel level sensor sucking in air. There is a fuel strainer attached (rough filter) at the inlet to the fuel pump with fuel level sensor. The signal from the fuel level sensor is transmitted to the SAM control unit (N10) which transmits the signal via the Control Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) (CAN) to the instrument cluster (A1).
