Steering wheel

Steering wheel is the means by which the operator controls the vehicle direction. It is therefore the primary input to the steering system. Steering wheel is made up of steel rod shaped into a circular rim and supported by spokes. The spokes are supported by the steering wheel hub, which turns on a bearing mounted on top of the steering column.

Operator’s effort applied on the steering wheel becomes torque on the steering column. Therefore, the larger the steering wheel diameter, larger the torque applied on the steering column for the same effort from the operator. The Electric horn switch is mounted in the steering wheel hub for horn actuation.

Steering column

Steering column connects the steering wheel and power steering gearbox. It transmits the turning effort of the operator on the steering wheel to the power steering gearbox. The major components of a steering column assembly are steering tube, bearing, universal joints & steering shaft (intermediate shaft). For easy accessibility of electrical controls like head lamps, direction indicators etc the combination switch assembly and ignition switch are mounted on to the steering column. A pneumatically operated switch is provided on the steering column for tilt & height adjustment of the steering wheel to ensure comfortable driving position.

The steering tube has threads at the top end for a nut which holds the steering wheel. A universal joint is mounted at the lower end of the steering column which connects with the steering shaft. Steering shaft has an extension mechanism to adjust to the upward and downward movement of the steering wheel. Based on the requirement of the operator the steering wheel position is adjustable for a comfortable driving position.

Pitman arm

Pitman arm is a steel lever attached to the output shaft of the power steering gearbox. The pitman arm changes the rotary motion of the output shaft of power steering gearbox to linear motion.

Drag link

Drag link is an assembled tube that connects the pitman arm and the steering arm. Drag link has ball joints at both ends, which isolates and gives the necessary freedom for axle movement relative to the pitman arm.

Steering arm

Steering arm connects the drag link to the steering knuckle on the operator side of the vehicle. When the drag link is moved in a linear direction, the steering arm rotates the steering knuckle, which changes the angle of the steering knuckle spindle.

Tie rod

Tie rod is a long assembled tube which connects the RH and LH side knuckle. It is mounted with ball joints on either sides. When the RH knuckle is moved by the drag link, the force and movement is transmitted to the LH side knuckle with help of tie rod. The wheel position for the Toe-in or Toe-out is maintained at Tie rod.

Steering knuckle

Steering knuckle is mounted over the front axle beam by means of steep pins known as kingpin. They provide the ability for pivoting action required to steer the vehicle. The angled pivot axis provides self centering of the wheels at the end of a turn and the vehicle has to move straight.
