Vehicles with 4MATIC have permanent four-wheel drive and are equipped only with automatic transmission.
The drive torque is distributed to the driven axles by a single-stage transfer case without cross-country gear at a ratio of 35/65 % front/rear.
The four-wheel electronic traction system (ETS), which is based on the two-wheel ETS, is installed as a standard feature.
Up to three differential locks can be simulated with this improved system.
The transfer case (6) is attached directly to the automatic transmission without intermediate flange forming one drive unit with the engine and front axle gear.

The transfer case does not have hydraulic or mechanical differential locks allowing the weight to be reduced significantly.
Repair note
Filling transmission with oil after installation of transfer case:

Fill transmission with oil up to bottom of filler opening

Test drive vehicle and correct transmission oil level again.

The chamber in the front housing section of the transfer case, in which the planetary gear set is located, is supplied with oil only when the transfer case is in operation. For this reason it is necessary to add transmission oil following the test drive.
