115 Charge air cooler
Location
The charge air cooler is located at the front under the radiator.
Task
The charge air cooler should increase the engine output. In the case of compression this comes inevitably to an increase in the air temperature. This is why a charge air cooler is used. The fact that at high temperatures and the same volumes more pressure arises means that the air volume can be increased even further by cooling the air after compression.
Design
The charge air cooler is a heat exchanger in crossflow format.
Function
During the charging process warmed and compressed charge air is led to the charge air cooler. The air flow produced when driving flows through the corrugated ribs pipe system cooling the charge air. The fill level in the cylinder is increased by cooled off charge air.
The charge air cooling is based on the principle that cold air takes on less volume but contains more oxygen molecules. The ratio oxygen per volume increases therefore if air is cooled. Through the additional amount of oxygen, more fuel can be converted in the same combustion chamber (same volume) which in turn means a high amount of energy.
