Remove

Switch on ignition.

Release parking brake.

Switch off ignition.

 Do not remove the transmitter key.
The transmitter key must remain inserted during the entire repair. Otherwise the parking brake will be applied automatically.

Remove rear wheels.

Turn back brakepads on rear axle.


Do not use sharp-edged tools.
Otherwise, brake linings and brake disks may be damaged.

Drain oil from rear axle differential.



 Collect and check oil using a suitable container.

If there are shavings (wear debris) in the oil.



Replace the rear axle differential.

Mark installation position of propeller shaft (1) relative to rear axle differential and remove screws (3).

Detach propeller shaft (1) with flex disk (5) from rear axle differential and fasten to underbody.



Check

Check rear axle shafts for unobstructed movement.

 It must be possible to turn the rear axle shafts easily by hand.

If the rear axle shafts cannot be turned easily by hand.



Release brake cables by unfastening the adjusting nut on the cable slack adjuster.

Connect diagnostic system and move electric parking brake into assembly position.

 To do so, follow the procedure in the menu "Electric parking brake (EFB) control unit".

If the rear axle shafts still cannot be turned lightly by hand.



Localize and eliminate cause.

Check end play at drive flange (2).

 Drive flange (2) may not exhibit any end play.

If end play is found at the drive flange (2).



Replace the rear axle differential.

Determine friction torque at drive pinion and note it down.

Determine friction torque at drive pinion and adjust if necessary.

If the friction torque is still outside the tolerance after adjusting.

Replace the rear axle differential.

Install

Pound in locking collar of collar nut (4).

 Locking collar must make contact with slot side (arrow).

Mount propeller shaft (1) with flex disk (5) onto drive flange (2).

 Pay attention to markings made.

Screw in new screws (3).

Fill rear axle differential with oil.



Adjust parking brake.

If the brake cables are released or the electric parking brake is in the assembly position.

Mount rear wheels.

Operate brake pedal several times.

 This ensures that the brakepads make contact with the brake disks again.



Check

Perform leakage test.
