| Remove/install | ||
Danger! | Risk of injury caused by fingers being jammed or pinched when removing, installing or aligning hoods, doors, trunk lid/rear-end door or sliding roof. | When moving components, ensure that no body parts or limbs are within the operating range of moving parts.
1 | Open engine hood and raise to vertical position
2 | Remove partition wall between wheelhouses
3 | Remove air filter housing
4 | Remove electric fan | ||
5 | Remove poly-V-belt | Installation: Lock clamping device with 5 mm dia. drift or pin.
6 | Remove cylinder head covers
7 | Remove a spark plug from each cylinder | See:
| Replace spark plugs | ||
8 | Set crankshaft to a 40° crank angle after ignition TDC and interlock camshaft with the locating plates | The engine must not be turned back; otherwise the timing chain could skip.
Rotate engine at the center bolt on the crankshaft in the direction of rotation of the engine until the marking 40° on the belt pulley/vibration damper and marking on the timing case cover match.
The grooves on the camshafts must be pointing toward the inner V.
Locating plate on the right
Locating plate on the left
9 | Remove chain tensioner
10 | Remove camshaft Hall sensor
11 | Remove camshaft sprockets | Installation: Check engine valve timing.
If necessary after testing:
Set the basic position of camshafts
| |||
Open-end wrench | |||
Insertion tool | |||
Torque wrench | |||
12 | Remove the camshaft bearing bridges
13 | Position piston of cylinder to be processed to TDC | Rotate engine at crankshaft center bolt by holding timing chain up for this step so that it does not jam.
Installation: Before installing the camshaft sprockets, again turn back crankshaft in the starting position of a 40° crank angle after ignition TDC on cylinder 1.
14 | Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving. | Attach park pawl. If necessary install retaining lock for crankshaft:
Install retaining lock for crankshaft/starter ring gear
15 | Connect cylinder leak tester
16 | Pressurize compression chamber to about 5 bar
17 | Screw in assembly lever (02) with counterholder (01) in cylinder head | Valve assembly tools case
18 | Attach and align assembly lever (02) and thrust piece (03) in the counterholder | Attach the thrust piece vertically to the upper valve plate (8) and align with the assembly tool.
Valve assembly tools case
19 | Remove upper valve disk (8) and valve spring (9) | Do not allow valves to touch the piston crowns otherwise they will be damaged.
Compress valve spring and remove split valve spring retainer locks (10) with tweezers or magnetic rod. The valve springs of the inlet and exhaust valves are identical.
Magnetic finger | |||
Tweezers | |||
20 | Remove bottom valve disc (11)
21 | Replace valve stem seal (12) | Pull valve stem seal out of valve stem using pliers.
Installation: Before fitting the new valve stem seal with the drift, a protective sleeve must be fitted to the valve stem to protect the valve stem seal from damage.

Drift | |||
| Checking | ||
22 | Inspect surface of valve stem for roughness and ridging | Visual inspection or with nail. Replace valves with a rough stem surface or formation of ridging:
Replace valves. | |||
23 | Check upper valve disk (8) and lower valve disk (11) | Check valve disk for pitting; replace if necessary.
24 | Install in the reverse order |
