04 Cylinder leaktightness tester
R4 Spark plugs
| Remove/install | ||
Danger! | Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near engine | Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving.
1 | Bring the engine up to operating temperature (approx. 80 °C) | Check the cylinder for leaks only when the engine is at normal operating temperature.
2 | Remove key from the ignition lock | On vehicles with Keyless Go, code 889: Press keyless go start/stop button repeatedly until ignition is switched off
3 | Open engine hood | ||
4 | Remove the partition wall between the wheelhouse liners
Danger! | Risk of injury to skin and eyes caused by scalding from contact with hot coolant spray. Risk of poisoning from swallowing coolant. | Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 °C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.
5 | Undo cap of coolant expansion reservoir
6 | Remove oil filler cap | ||
7 | Remove a spark plug from each cylinder
| Replace spark plugs | ||
8 | Position the piston of the cylinder to be checked at the top dead center with the top dead center selector | Crank the engine at the center bolt of the crankshaft in the direction of rotation of the engine.
Socket wrench bit | |||
Cylinder leakage tester
9 | Connect cylinder leak tester (04) | Calibrate cylinder leakage tester (04) and screw the connection hose into the spark plug bore
Cylinder leakage tester
| Check | ||
10 | Pressurize the cylinder with compressed air and read off the pressure loss on the cylinder leak tester (04) | Cylinder leakage permissible total loss indication
Cylinder leaktightness permissible losses at valves and cylinder head gasket
Cylinder leaktightness permissible losses at pistons and piston rings
If the crankshaft rotates:
Install retaining lock for crankshaft
11 | Check the other cylinders in the firing order of the engine | Firing order
12 | Install in the reverse order |
