Preconditions

Ignition is switched on (circuit 15).

The motor control module is supplied with permanent current (circuit 30).

The immobilizer has been deactivated by the drive authorization system.

The transmitter key (S953) is authorized.

The starter lockout has been disengaged. The following conditions have been met for this purpose:

The transmission is in neutral position (only for start request via engine start and engine stop button).

The power take-off, if present, has been switched off.

The engine is off or engine speed is < 50 rpm.

Function

In order to start the engine, all requirements must be met. The drive train CAN receives the command to issue a start request. The engine management control unit then actuates the engaging relay of the starter via a front-end relay.

The starter engages and brings the engine to the minimum speed. The engine management control unit checks whether the minimum speed has been reached.

The signal of the crankshaft position sensor informs the engine management control unit of the positions of the cylinders. The top dead center (TDC) of cylinders 1 and 6 is required in order to activate the cylinder 1 fuel injector and the cylinder 6 fuel injector. The activation time and duration depend on the engine's current operating state.

At the same time, the engine management control unit determines the injection quantity required for combustion. It activates the quantity control valve as well as the cylinder 1 fuel injector and cylinder 6 fuel injector. Fuel is injected into the combustion chamber of cylinder 1 and cylinder 6.

This so-called double ignition serves to accelerate the starting procedure. It is continued until the ignition TDC of cylinder 1 is detected by the camshaft position sensor signal. This is followed by cylinders 5 and 2, 3 and 4, and then 1 and 6 again.

If the camshaft position sensor does not issue a signal, part of the double ignition will be switched off. To protect the engine, the maximum torque of the engine is limited. The engine management control unit can also regulate the limp-home speed.

The injection quantity is determined irrespective of the accelerator pedal position in order to achieve a reliable engine start with the lowest possible pollutant emission.

The injection quantity required for the starting procedure depends primarily on the coolant temperature. The engine management control unit queries the coolant temperature via the outlet coolant temperature sensor.

There is an atmospheric pressure sensor in the engine management control unit for determining the height. The vehicle's current altitude can be calculated via the air pressure of the surrounding area.

The calculated injection quantity is injected and the engine starts.

If the engine does not start, the injection quantity will be increased constantly up to a specified limit value. The maximum injection quantity will continue to be injected until actuation of the starter is interrupted by the driver or the engine management control unit. This will protect the starter against mechanical or thermal overload (start time limitation).

If the engine is running and the driver continues to press and hold the engine start/stop button (S205), starter actuation will be interrupted (starter disengagement speed).

The following factors lessen the cold start ability of diesel engines at low outside temperatures:

Elevated engine turning resistance

Lower combustion chamber temperatures

Unfavorable fuel atomization conditions

Under certain pre-conditions, the result is a pilot injection. These provide the following:

Starting times are shortened.

The engine's smooth running properties are improved.

The throttle response is more precise.

White smoke emissions are reduced.

Pollutant emissions are reduced.

Noise emission is minimized.
