| Removing | ||
Danger! | Risk of injury to skin and eyes caused by handling hot or glowing objects. | Wear safety gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary.
1 | Remove ring gear with differential
2 | Remove input shaft of portal axle final drive | On versions without locating pins between input shaft and drive gear, the second input shaft can be removed from the drive gear in the opposite portal housing. On the version with fixing of the axle shaft at the drive pinion gear remove the opposite portal housing of the rear axle housing together with the second axle shaft.
3 | Detach joint flange from drive pinion (1)
| |||
4 | Detach oil retainer from joint flange
5 | Remove radial sealing ring from the rear axle housing
6 | Press drive pinion gear (1) out of the rear axle housing | Secure outer tapered roller bearing to prevent it from falling down and remove.
7 | Detach shim (3) from drive pinion gear (1)
8 | Detach inner race of tapered roller bearing (2) from drive pinion gear (1)
9 | Remove outer race of tapered roller bearing and shim for contact pattern from the rear axle housing
10 | Clean all parts, check for damage and wear, and replace if necessary | If the drive pinion gear or ring gear are damaged then both parts must be replaced together (ring gear set):
Disassemble/assemble ring gear with differential
| Measure | ||
11 | Determine installed dimension for the shim for the contact pattern of the bevel gear set | When using the shim found beforehand during disassembly in our experience the required adjustment values result, however a check is imperative.
| Install | ||
12 | Install outer races of the tapered roller bearing of the drive pinion bearing in the rear axle housing | Insert shim in the thickness determined in procedure 11 between the outer race of the inner tapered roller bearing and rear axle housing.
13 | Press inner race of the tapered roller bearing (2) onto the drive pinion gear (1) | Heat up inner race of tapered roller bearing (2) press on until it abuts with the drive pinion gear (1) using a suitable drift.
14 | Fit measuring ring over collar on drive pinion (1) | Install measuring ring for determining the required thickness of the shim (3) instead of the shim (3). The dowel pins point away from the inner tapered roller bearing of the drive pinion gear (1). When using the shim (3) found beforehand during disassembly in our experience the required adjustment values result, however a check is imperative.

15 | Insert drive pinion (1) into rear axle housing.
16 | Attach joint flange to drive pinion (1) | Do not secure and tighten slotted nut yet. Before assembling the joint flange the drive pinion bearing must be cooled down to ambient temperature.
17 | Tighten the slotted nut carefully until the friction torque of the drive pinion gear (1) is in the permissible range | Alternately turn the drive pinion gear (1) several times in both directions and check the friction torque:
Check and adjust rolling resistance of drive pinion Observe different friction torques of drive pinion bearing
| |||
18 | Detach joint flange from drive pinion gear (1)
| |||
19 | Push drive pinion (1) out of rear axle housing
20 | Detach measuring ring from drive pinion gear (1)
21 | Determine thickness of shim (3) on drive pinion gear (1)
22 | Place shim (3) over the collar on the drive pinion gear (1) | Install the shim (3) in the thickness determined in procedure 21.
23 | Insert drive pinion (1) into rear axle housing.
24 | Attach joint flange to drive pinion (1) | Tighten the slotted nut with the specified torque, but do not secure yet.
| |||
| |||
| |||
25 | Check and adjust rolling resistance of drive pinion (1) | If the measured value for rolling resistance is not in the permissible range, the shim (3) must be corrected accordingly. Observe different friction torques of drive pinion bearing
| |||
26 | Detach joint flange from drive pinion gear (1)
| |||
27 | Press radial sealing ring into rear axle housing | Use new radial sealing ring.
Cap | |||
28 | Press oil retainer into joint flange
Handle | |||
29 | Attach joint flange to drive pinion (1)
| |||
| |||
| |||
30 | Install input shaft of portal axle final drive | On versions without locating pins between input shaft and drive gear, the second input shaft can be pushed into the drive gear in the opposite portal housing. On versions with locating pins between input shaft and drive gear, the opposite portal housing must be attached to the rear axle housing together with the second input shaft.
31 | Install crown wheel with differential | When installing the ring gear with differential the thickness of the shim for gear backlash as well as the friction torque of the bearing of the ring gear with differential is determined |
