Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near engine

Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not grasp hot or rotating parts.

Move steering to center position

Check the firm seating and locking of the locknut (1) on the steering gear pitman arm

Unhook the left (8) and center tie rod (6) from the steering gear pitman arm (2)

Check the play between the steering-sector shaft and piston

 Check the steering for freedom from play by pushing and pulling on the steering gear pitman arm (2). If play is present, the steering must be replaced (subject to a separate repair order).

Check the steering shaft bearings by moving the steering wheel to and fro sideways

 Testing when tie rods are removed If play is present, defective parts should be replaced immediately (subject to a separate repair order).

Remove steering column cover (9)

Check universal joints of steering shaft (10) on miter gear (11) and on steering gear (12) for play by shaking

If play is present, defective parts should be replaced immediately (subject to a separate repair order).

Check sluggishness of steering shaft by turning at the steering wheel

 Checking by turning through at least 360° in each direction

Install the left (8) and center tie rod (6) on the steering gear pitman arm (2)

 Replace locking cotter pins (5).



Check center position of the steering gear

Check and adjust center steering position on steering gear

Check bolts of the steering gear mounting (13) for firm seating

 If necessary, retighten mounting bolts of steering
(subject to a separate repair order).

Check bolts of miter gear mounting (14) for firm seating



Check bolts of steering column mounting (15) for firm seating

Check the bolts of the steering shaft universal joints (16) for firm seating

Check bolts of telescopic shaft universal joints (17) for firm seating

Install steering column cover

Check the complete steering system for leaks, lines and hoses for chafing points

 Eliminate leakages and chafing points immediately
(subject to a separate repair order).

Check miter gear (18) for leaks

 In the event of leaks, replace miter gear (subject to separate repair order).

Checking hydraulic steering limiter



Check/adjust hydraulic limiter

Check steering and power steering pump for maximum pressure

Start engine and move front wheels to straight-ahead position.

Checking play in the steering wheel

 Turn steering wheel alternately to left and right until front wheels move.

If there is unacceptable play measured at the periphery of the steering wheel: 

Check steering gear and all steering linkage parts for unacceptable play (subject to a separate repair order).

Check play in steering idler arm

 Check for free play by moving to and fro, if play is present replace mount
(subject to a separate repair order).

Check rubber boots (4) for condition and tie rod ends for condition and play

Check track rod and drag link linkage for play, check rubber boots
