Danger! | Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running | Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Danger! | Risk of accident caused by the vehicle starting off on its own when jacked up. Risk of injury caused by rotating parts when working on running engine or drive train. | Ensure that jack stands have secure and adequate footing.
Danger! | Risk of injury caused by moving parts that can pinch, crush or, in extreme cases, even sever extremities | No parts of the body or limbs should be within the operating range of the mechanism when moving components.
1 | Conduct a road test | During the test drive, check that the steering wheel returns to the correct position, whether components jam and whether there is excessive friction or increased play.
2 | Place front wheels on turnplates | The front axle must be loaded with the vehicle weight.
| Position vehicle on turnplates | ||
3 | Move front wheels to straight-ahead position
4 | Open front flap (1) | See Operator's Manual
5 | Detach left front underfloor paneling
| Remove/install underbody cladding | ||
6 | Start engine and run at idling speed
| Checking | ||
7 | Check steering gear (3), power steering pump, lines and threaded connections for leaks and damage
8 | Checking play in the steering wheel | Turn steering wheel alternately to left and right until front wheels move. If there is unacceptable play (measured at the circumference of the steering wheel), the steering gear (3) and all steering linkage parts must be checked and repaired subject to a separate repair order.
9 | Turn off engine | ||
10 | Check play in steering idler arm | Check for free play by moving backward and forward. If there is play, replace the bearing of the steering idler arm subject to a separate repair order.
11 | Check track rod and drag link linkage for play, check rubber boots | Defective tie rod joints and drag link ball joints must be replaced subject to a separate repair order.
12 | Check locknut securing steering gear pitman arm (9) to steering gear (3) | Check that the locknut securing the steering gear pitman arm (9) is seated correctly and secured properly.
13 | Detach drag link (8) from steering gear pitman arm (9) | With the drag link (8) detached, the steering-sector shaft of the steering gear (3) must not be turned by more than 38° from the center position, otherwise the bolts with displacement bushes (10) of the automatically adjusting hydraulic limiter will be pushed to the end position. These would then have to be replaced to ensure that the system functions correctly.
| Remove/install drag link on steering gear pitman arm | ||
14 | Check that there is no play at steering gear (3) | Check that there is no play at the steering gear (3) by pushing and pulling on the steering gear pitman arm (9). If play is present, the steering gear (3) must be replaced subject to a separate repair order.
15 | Remove steering column cover
| Remove/install steering column trim | ||
16 | Check steering shaft bearings for play | Check with the drag link (8) detached by moving the steering wheel from side to side. If play is present, the defective parts must be replaced immediately subject to a separate repair order.
17 | Check universal joints of steering shaft for play | Check the universal joints of the steering shaft for play by shaking. If play is present, the defective parts must be replaced immediately subject to a separate repair order.
18 | Check that steering shaft moves freely | Check by turning the steering wheel 360° to the right and left. Defective parts or parts that do not move freely must be replaced subject to a separate repair order.
19 | Attach drag link (8) temporarily to steering gear pitman arm (9)
20 | Check steering angle limit | If the drag link (8) has been detached, steering systems with automatically adjustable hydraulic steering limiters may only be turned to the end position if after this readjustment with new bolts with displacement bushes (10) takes place. If necessary, the bolts with displacement bushes (10) must be removed prior to performing this check.
| Check and adjust steering angle limiter | ||
21 | Attach drag link (8) to steering gear pitman arm (9) | Use new retaining cotter bolt (6).
| Remove/install drag link on steering gear pitman arm | ||
22 | Move steering wheel to straight-ahead position | In this position, the steering gear (3) must be in the center position and the front wheels must be in the straight-ahead position. The assembly slot of the lower universal joint of the steering shaft must be pointing forward; if necessary:
| Turn steering gear to center position | ||
23 | Check that bolts securing steering gear (3) to substructure are seated securely
| |||
24 | Check that bolts of steering column attachment are seated securely
| |||
25 | Check that bolts securing universal joints to steering shaft are seated securely
| |||
26 | Install steering column cover
| Remove/install steering column trim | ||
27 | Check entire steering system for leaks | Eliminate leaks immediately subject to separate repair order.
28 | Check lines and hoses for chafe marks | Eliminate any chafe marks immediately subject to a separate repair order.
29 | Install test equipment
| Connecting and disconnecting testing unit | ||
30 | Check hydraulic limiter
| Check and adjust hydraulic limiter | ||
31 | Check steering for maximum pressure
| Check pressure relief valve of steering | ||
32 | Check valve return | ||
| Check valve return | ||
33 | Disconnect testing unit
| Connecting and disconnecting testing unit | ||
34 | Check power steering oil level | Correct the oil level if necessary.
35 | Attach left front underfloor paneling
| Remove/install underbody cladding | ||
36 | Close front flap (1) | See Operator's Manual
37 | Drive vehicle off turnplates | The vehicle should only be driven off the turnplates if they have been secured in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. |
