Danger ! | Risk of injury caused by touching hot retarder and by scalding from hot retarderoil. Risk of injury to skin or eyes caused by retarder oil escaping under high pressure | Do not carry out any work unless retarder is switched off. Wear suitable protective clothing and safety glasses when working on the hot retarder.
Perform preparatory tasks
1 | Perform a test drive and bring oil of hydrodynamic retarder up to operating temperature | Switch on the hydrodynamic retarder several times during the test drive in order to bring the oil up to operating temperature.
2 | Park vehicle on a horizontal surface and switch off ignition
3 | Detach engine compartment encapsulation under transmission | See information from vehicle manufacturer.
4 | Open maintenance flap covering transmission | See information from vehicle manufacturer.
| Check | ||
5 | Inspect hydrodynamic retarder for leaks | If there is a problem
| |||
Rectify leaks subject to separate repair order.
6 | Inspect propeller shaft screws/bolts and check that screws/bolts at heat exchanger are seated correctly | If there is a problem
| |||
Rectify any damage subject to separate repair order.
| Clean | ||
7 | Clean area around drain screws (1, 2)
8 | Clean area around screw plug (4)
9 | Clean area around screw plug (3)
Perform oil change | |||
10 | Have a suitable receptacle for oil ready to hand, remove drain screws (1, 2) as well as screw plug (4), collect and fully drain off oil
11 | Check seal on screw plug (4) for damage and screw in screw plug (4) tightly | Two versions are used for sealing the screw plug (4).
Screw plug at pressure regulating valve
If copper sealing ring on screw plug (4) is damaged
| |||
Replace copper sealing ring.
If integrated plastic ring of screw plug (4) is damaged
| |||
Replace screw plug (4).
12 | Check seals on drain screws (1, 2) for damage and screw in drain screws (1, 2) tightly | Two versions are used for sealing the drain screws (1, 2).
Drain screw to oil reservoir
Drain plug at hydrodynamic retarder
If copper sealing ring on drain screw (1, 2) is damaged
| |||
Replace copper sealing ring.
If integrated copper sealing ring of drain screw (1, 2) is damaged
| |||
Replace drain screw (1 and/or 2).
13 | Remove screw plug (3)
14 | Measure volume of drained oil
15 | Pour in specified oil filling quantity, as per step 1 | Pour in the oil slowly over a period of at least 3 min.
Retarder oil filling quantity
16 | Screw in screw plug (3) tightly with old seal | Screw plug, oil filler opening to oil reservoir
17 | Perform a test drive and switch on hydrodynamic retarder twice at highest brake stage for approx. 5 s each time.
18 | Remove screw plug (3)
19 | Refill specified oil filling quantity, as per step 2 | Pour in the oil slowly over a period of at least 3 min.
Retarder oil filling quantity
20 | Check seal on screw plug (3) for damage and screw in screw plug (3) tightly | Two versions are used for sealing the screw plug (3).
Screw plug, oil filler opening to oil reservoir
If copper sealing ring on screw plug (3) is damaged
| |||
Replace copper sealing ring.
If integrated plastic ring of screw plug (3) is damaged
| |||
Replace screw plug (3).
21 | Perform a test drive and bleed hydrodynamic retarder | If present and possible, switch off the foot control of the hydrodynamic retarder. Move the vehicle at 50 km/h and switch on the hydrodynamic retarder 5 times in the first brake stage for approx. 5 s each time.
| Check | ||
22 | Perform leak check in working area
| Install | ||
23 | Close maintenance flap above transmission | See information from vehicle manufacturer.
24 | Attach engine compartment encapsulation under transmission | See information from vehicle manufacturer. |
