General

Navigation is determination of the position of the vehicle, determination of the direction and distance to the destination (after entry of a destination) and accomplishment of measures required to reach this destination.

Navigation therefore includes the following terms:

Location finding

Route calculation

Destination guidance

Location finding

The location of the vehicle is calculated continuously by the auto-pilot system (APS) with the aid of the following procedures:

Basic location finding (dead reckoning)

Global positioning system (GPS) location finding

Map-assisted location finding (map matching)

The data for these three procedures is corrected automatically when they supply different information to the APS navigation processor (A60).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Route calculation

The route is calculated by the APS navigation processor (A60) after entry of the destination or automatically upon deviating from the recommended route. After calculation the route is stored in the RAM of the navigation processor.

Entering destination

The destination can be entered on the radio and navigation operating unit (A59) and is processed by the APS navigation processor (A60). Only destinations can be entered which are listed on the CD-ROM.
The data read in from the CD-ROM map is indicated on the display of the operating unit. The destination entered is stored.

Destination guidance

Destination guidance is started after entering a destination on the APS radio and navigation operating unit (A59) and calculation of the route by the APS navigation processor (A60). If the driver departs from the recommended route, the "Route updating" feature becomes active.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Complete navigation is not available outside of the CD-ROM map boundaries. Only the straight line route to the destination with distance is indicated.

The words "NO MAP" appear on the display.

Loading language

The data for voice output for destination guidance is stored on the CD-ROM.

This data is read from the CD-ROM by the APS navigation processor (A60) and stored in the memory. After the language has been loaded, the announcement is made:

"Language loaded"

Loading the language requires approx. 20 s.

- Following a short power failure (< approx. 15 s) to the auto-pilot system, while loading a language, it is necessary for the user to load the language data again, because it may be only partially present (recognizable on gaps, not understandable) or erased completely.

- Following a longer power failure (> approx. 15 s) to the auto-pilot system while loading the language, the language data is lost and is automatically reloaded.
