Warning | Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. | Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.
2 | Warm up engine to normal operating temperature. | Coolant temperature approx. 80 °C.
| Remove | ||
3 | Remove cylinder head cover. |

| Check | ||
4 | Turn engine in direction of engine rotation until the cam (3) on the compensating element (2) to be checked is on its base circle. | Do not turn engine against direction of engine rotation.
Use counterholder 651 589 00 40 00 or counterholder 651 589 08 40 00 to turn the engine.

5 | Press compensating element (2) downwards via roller-type rocker arm (4) using suitable tool (5).
The compensating element (2) must not lower with normal force of the hand and must lower only very slowly with strong force.
6 | Check remaining compensating elements (2) in the same way. | If several compensating elements (2) drop,
| |||
Check oil ducts and oil feed bores of the compensating elements (2) for contamination.
If the oil ducts and oil feed bores of the compensating elements (2) are contaminated,
| |||
Blow compressed air through the oil ducts in the flow direction.
If one compensating element (2) lowers too strongly compared to the other compensating elements (2) or the oil feed bores are plugged,
| |||
Replace affected compensating element (2).
If several compensating elements (2) are defective,
| |||
Check oil pressure. | |||
| |||
| |||
| Install | ||
7 | Install cylinder head cover. |
